Football: Lacazette double helps Arsenal beat Valencia 3-1
LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal's Alexandre Lacazette scored twice in the first half and fellow striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang snatched a last-gasp third goal to secure a 3-1 win over Valencia in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday (May 2).
Mouctar Diakhaby's early header had given Valencia the lead and a precious away goal but Frenchman Lacazette bagged a double before halftime to settle the jitters at The Emirates.
At 2-1 and with the clock showing 90 minutes the semi-final was precariously-balanced for the return at the Mestalla next week but Aubameyang's late volley means Arsenal will head to Spain as favourites to reach the final in Baku.
Eintracht Frankfurt were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea in the night's other semi-final, first leg.
Arsenal had lost three consecutive Premier League games to drop to fifth place in the domestic table with two games to go - seriously undermining their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League via a top-four finish.
But manager Unai Emery has a special relationship with the Europa League having won it three times in a row with Sevilla and delivering the trophy to Arsenal for the first time now looks their most likely route back into the elite tournament.
"We know it's going to be hard (in Valencia) so of course getting as many goals as we could is better for us," Lacazette, who should have been celebrating a hat-trick, said.
"Thankfully, Auba scored the third one.
"We want to win the Europa League to go straight to the Champions League but also to win a trophy."
DREADFUL OPENING
Arsenal had conceded nine goals in their last three Premier League games and it was easy to see why in a dreadful opening.
Valencia, themselves struggling to secure a top-four spot in La Liga, could not believe how easily they sliced through the home defence and had already gone close to scoring before towering Frenchman Diakhaby put them ahead.
When a corner was swung over, an unmarked Rodrigo headed it back across goal where Diakhaby rose above three stationary Arsenal defenders to nod into the net.
For a while there was panic in the Arsenal ranks and both Daniel Parejo and Goncalo Guedes went close to a second goal, but the hosts equalised with a stunning breakaway goal seven minutes after going behind.
Lacazette started the move, releasing Aubameyang with a superb pass. The Gabonese forward surged into the area but instead of shooting, turned back inside and rolled the ball for the on-rushing Frenchman to slide his shot past Neto.
Another seven minutes passed before Arsenal took the lead.
Granit Xhaka's cross found Lacazette and although his header lacked power it bounced off the turf and just went over the line despite Neto's desperate attempt to keep it out.
Suddenly, Arsenal were rampant and another Xhaka cross found Aubameyang but he bounced his volley over the bar.
Valencia burst back into life at the start of the second half and it needed a brave header by Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny to stop a cross reaching the dangerous Goncalo Guedes.
Lacazette wasted two gilt-edged chances to put the hosts in control, first fluffing a header from Aubameyang's cross with the goal gaping then weakly shooting straight at Neto.
Valencia, losing semi-finalists in 2012 and 2014, would have been reasonably content heading back to Spain with a 2-1 defeat but they switched off in the dying seconds.
Moments after Neto had made a superb save, Arsenal kept the ball alive and Sead Kolasinac's superb cross found Aubameyang at the far post to drive his volley home.

7-0 rout proves 'teen' Citizens maturing fast
LONDON • Pep Guardiola may have described his Manchester City side as Champions League "teenagers" in the build-up, but the 7-0 rout of Schalke in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Tuesday is a clear indication of their growing maturity.
The resounding 10-2 aggregate win - the biggest achieved in the Champions League by an English club - puts the Citizens among the favourites when the last-eight draw is made tomorrow.
And, after recording their 61st goal in all competitions this year, the Spaniard declared his side's intention to "try for the second time in our history to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League".
He said: "We are delighted to be in the quarter-finals. The last 15 minutes and the second half we were incredibly good, quick and dynamic.
"I know Schalke are in a tough period but, even in that situation, you have to do your job.
"I'm not going to say we are not going to fight (for a maiden Champions League title). As a club, we are like a teenager team because the best success... is one semi-final and two quarter-finals.
"You can't compare us to Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Liverpool or Juventus. They have how many?
"But the teenagers have desire and are not scared. This competition is incredibly tough. We will see how far we can get. I've won two (Champions Leagues) but I've lost seven. All I can say is we will try and, next season, we will try again."
In their seven previous Champions League campaigns, City have reached the last four only once but, having won 18 of their past 19 matches in all competitions, the momentum could carry them to the June 1 final in Madrid.
Leroy Sane again scored against his former club as he became the first player to make three assists in a knockout game since Franck Ribery in March 2012.
A brace by Sergio Aguero and strikes by Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and substitutes Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus further contributed to the heaviest loss suffered by a German team in the competition's history.
But Guardiola felt it was far from Sane's best display, insisting the 23-year-old "wasn't aggressive enough", before warning City's future opponents that the winger's potential had yet to be fulfilled as "he is young".

Football: Valverde admits he's 'not happy with the result' as Barcelona draw blank in Lyon
LYON (AFP) - Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde shrugged off his team's struggles in front of goal after they were held to a 0-0 draw in Lyon in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday (Feb 19).
The Spanish side had most of the chances at the Groupama Stadium, with Luis Suarez firing just wide in the second half, although it was Lyon who came the closest when Martin Terrier hit the bar early on.
Lionel Messi and Co. were once again left frustrated on the road at the business end of the competition, and have now gone six away matches without winning in the Champions League knockout rounds, scoring just a single goal in that time. It is a run that goes back three years.
Desperate to end Real Madrid's recent European dominance, Barca must now finish the job when the teams meet again at the Camp Nou on March 13, but Lyon remain in the tie.
Barcelona's form needs to improve between now and then, though - they have drawn four of their last five matches in all, and have scored just once, from a penalty, in their last three outings.
"We played good football, but you have to hit the target as well, and we didn't," Valverde said.
"We are on the right road, though, and the tie is still up in the air. We will try to win it in front of our fans.
"I am not happy with the result, but I am happy with the performance and with what we created.
"We didn't score, but that is how it is. It is not easy to win away from home in the Champions League."
The visitors - who started with Sergi Roberto in midfield rather than the out-of-form Philippe Coutinho - had good reason to be wary of their hosts, who have excelled in big games this season.
Bruno Genesio's team had taken four points from a possible six against Manchester City in the group stage and recently won at home to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.
They are still unbeaten in Europe this season, although this was their sixth consecutive draw.
"It's a satisfying result because it leaves us with a chance for the second leg, and we didn't concede. If we can score at the Camp Nou we'll have a chance of going through," said Genesio.
He admitted that he had hoped for an even better performance, but Lyon were missing their World Cup-winning captain Nabil Fekir due to suspension here.
It was the 21-year-old Terrier who surprisingly started in his place, and he delivered the most exciting moment of the first half for the crowd of almost 58,000 with a thunderous strike from 20 metres out in the ninth minute that was tipped onto the bar by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The same player later shot over at the end of a fantastic move, while Houssem Aouar had earlier been denied by the goalkeeper, but it was Barcelona who enjoyed the longer spells of possession.
Ousmane Dembele - one of two Frenchmen in the away line-up - came closest for them in the first half, although their best chances came after he had been replaced by Coutinho midway through the second period.
Suarez came within inches of breaking the deadlock 20 minutes from time, firing narrowly wide from Jordi Alba's cutback. He has now gone 16 away matches without scoring in the competition.
Coutinho had a powerful shot beaten away by Anthony Lopes, with the Lyon goalkeeper also frustrating Messi and Sergio Busquets as Barcelona dominated but departed without a potentially precious away goal.
"It is a little bit of a disappointment, but there is still the second leg to come and we hope to do better," said defender Clement Lenglet.
At least they extended their unbeaten record against Lyon to seven matches, but there remains hope for the French club ahead of the return.

Sacked Mourinho heading back to Madrid?
Sacked Mourinho heading back to Madrid?
MADRID • It may be only five days since Jose Mourinho's sacking by Manchester United, but the Portuguese could be back in management sooner rather than later.
Spanish daily El Pais has reported that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is considering a reunion with his former coach.
With the Spanish giants still reeling from Zinedine Zidane's departure, having sacked his replacement Julen Lopetegui in October and then appointing the inexperienced Santiago Solari, some Spanish media reports have said Perez could be tempted to bring Mourinho back.
The Portuguese, who was sacked by United on Tuesday, was with Real between 2010 and 2013, winning the LaLiga title with a record 100 points, scoring 121 goals, as well as lifting the Copa del Rey.
It was also reported that an "internal survey" has shown that the team believe Mourinho can steer Real back in the right direction following their tumble this season.
Although Solari has led Real to 10 wins in 12 games since succeeding Lopetegui, the team have faced plenty of criticism for some insipid recent performances. They have fallen five points behind leaders and bitter rivals Barcelona in the LaLiga title race.
While Spanish sports newspaper Marca dismissed the speculation about a Mourinho return, reporting that Real's club directors are not thinking about hiring him "in the short term or in the long term", that did not stop their colleagues in the media from grilling Real captain Sergio Ramos on Friday.
The Spaniard was forced to bat away questions about a Mourinho return at a press conference ahead of yesterday's Club World Cup final against United Arab Emirates side Al Ain.
"Mourinho left us five years ago yet everyone keeps talking about him. People need to show more respect to the coach we have now," the exasperated Ramos said.
"I'm not the person who decides which coach comes here or doesn't, some people seem to think that the captains decide which coach Real Madrid appoints."
Another of Mourinho's former clubs Inter Milan are also said to be eyeing his signature after Luciano Spalletti's failure to take them to the Champions League knockout stages this term, while British tabloid The Sun said that the 55-year-old could be set for a shock move to Wolverhampton.
Meanwhile, United forward Alexis Sanchez has denied rumours that he made a bet with teammate Marcos Rojo about Mourinho's sacking, reported the BBC.
It was said that Sanchez told Rojo to pay him £20,000 (S$34,731) after the axing materialised, a story which he called "false".

Football: Liverpool now on Man City's level insists Klopp, despite defeat
LONDON (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp believes his Liverpool side are at last a genuine match for Manchester City despite this week's 2-1 loss to the Premier League champions.
Thursday's defeat (Jan 3) was the first time Liverpool had lost in the league season, but they still remained four points clear at the top of the table from their title rivals.
The Reds beat City three times last term but Liverpool manager Klopp believes his side are a now much-improved outfit.
"From my point of view, we were never on a level with City since I came in," said Klopp.
"We won games against them, especially since Pep, but in these games City were better."
The German added: "We only scored more goals, but the possession was at least 60:40 for them in all the games but we won them. Now, it was 50:50.
"Last year, the Champions League (quarter-final) game at home when we won 3-0 it was a brilliant game but we were under pressure in a lot of moments.
Â
"I don't know if we had more than four shots on target, but we were quite clinical that day.
"This game was different to all the other ones we have played so far. Away to City is the most difficult game you can imagine at the moment.
"Yes we lost 2-1, but no-one would have been surprised if it was a draw and with a little bit of luck we could have won the game," said Klopp, whose side face fellow Premier League club Wolves in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

SINGAPORE - He is the new recruit among a strong cast of experienced internationals and league veterans.
But, for the second game in four days, young Hami Syahin stood out for Home United with another bright display.
Playing in a new deep-lying midfield role, the 20-year-old rescued a point for the Protectors in a 1-1 draw with Indonesian side PSM Makassar in their opening Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup Group H match at Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday (Feb 27).
"Coach (Saswadimata Dasuki) has always told me that whenever I find space, I should always take a shot," said Hami, who was named the Man of the Match. "That's why I took the chance when I saw it."
Home made a positive start before 1,589 fans, but fell behind when Makassar's Finnish forward Eero Markkanen scored with a left-footed volley in the 26th minute.
The Singapore Premier League club, who missed their injured foreign midfielders Song Ui-young (South Korea) and Isaka Cernak (Australia), then found themselves pinned down by the playmaking of Makassar's Dutch midfielder Willem Pluim.
But, in the 63rd minute, Hami decided to have a crack from 25 metres out and the ball smashed past Makassar goalkeeper Rivky Mokodompit into the top corner.
His goal drew praise from Makassar's Bosnian coach Darije Kalezic, who said: "They scored a goal that you could see only in the top competitions.
"We controlled the game, 100 per cent. We created enough chances to win the game, but didn't kill the game. But we have to be satisfied with one away point."
Hami, who joined Home from the Young Lions this season, also starred in last Saturday's Community Shield win over Albirex Niigata, bossing the midfield and scoring the decisive penalty in the shoot-out.
Saswadimata said: "He's got good vision, his technique is very strong.
"He can control the midfield with Izzdin (Shafiq). They have combined well together and I've told him to work really hard and he should have the ambition to go further."
Home are hoping to replicate last season's success when they won the Asean Zone final of the continent's second-tier club tournament before losing to North Korea's April 25 in the inter-zone play-off semi-finals.
Home's next fixture is on March 13, away to Philippine side Kaya FC, who drew 1-1 with Lao Toyota of Laos in the other group match.
