Football: FAS to shut down its elite academy

In a bid to refresh its youth system, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said yesterday that its elite FAS Football Academy (FFA) will be scrapped, with its players to continue their development at the various Singapore Premier League (SPL) clubs. In response to queries from the Sunday Times, FAS deputy president Bernard Tan said in an e-mail: "While the FFA has produced key players for the national team in the past 18 years, much of our youth development efforts were concentrated on a fairly narrow pipeline of elite players coming through.

A challenge to get to City's level: Ole

A challenge to get to City's level: Ole

LONDON • After lording it over their "noisy neighbours" for decades, it remains a bitter pill to swallow for Manchester United to admit their cross-town rivals Manchester City are now "the best team in the country".
Following a chastening 2-0 Premier League home defeat by City on Wednesday, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that to "close that gap and overtake them", they must first acknowledge their deficiencies.
While City are closing in on retaining their title with a one-point lead over Liverpool (88 points) and three games left, United are left with a battle with Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal for two Champions League spots.
It will be a tough ask given that it is now seven losses in nine games for the Norwegian handler, with his 28 per cent win ratio the worst of any full-time United boss. Jack Robson held the previous record at 29.5 per cent from 1914 to 1921.
Solskjaer, looking ahead to the pre-season rebuilding job, said it is now "his job to see who wants to sacrifice enough to be here".
He added: "We got a reaction and, in the end, we were beaten by a better team... You can see the work rate, it wasn't good enough though.
"They (City) have set the standard. For the last couple of seasons, they have been the best team in the league. That's the challenge for us to get to and we're clearly not there now. That's for everyone to see.
"There is a difference in quality. That is why they are top and we are where we are. Living in Manchester, we cannot be happy with that."
His candid assessment of their malaise cut little ice with pundits.
The abject display, with only one shot on target, even created a clash between former teammates.
Roy Keane was angered by Gary Neville's insistence that the Red Devils had "given their all" before putting the result down to the "gulf in class" between the two teams.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH
For the last couple of seasons, they (City) have been the best team in the league. That's the challenge for us to get to and we're clearly not there now.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Man United manager, on the huge task he has on hand.

Keane, though, felt there was a basic lack of application from the players, telling Sky Sports: "If that's a player giving it their all, then Manchester United are in even more trouble than I think, and they're in huge trouble."
The former club captain, who before the match singled out Paul Pogba as a "big problem" in a "squad full of bluffers", added: "We spoke about leaders and characters and I just don't think they have enough of them. These young players need examples around the club and that's the big question mark.
"The honeymoon period is definitely over. It's probably a bigger job than what he (Solskjaer) thought. The club has to back Ole now and let him this summer bring in the players he wants to turn these problems around."
Fellow pundit Graeme Souness agreed as he blamed their haphazard transfer policy as the root cause of "where the mistakes happen".
Yet United will continue to swim against the tide if they fail to land Champions League football next term.
Solskjaer acknowledged that Sunday's home league game against fourth-placed Chelsea, who are three points ahead, was do-or-die.
He said: "We know we must deliver a good performance. If we win it, we have two games to get those points and goals we need."

Football: Much-changed Atletico sneak narrow win over Leganes

MADRID (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid kept up their pursuit of La Liga leaders Barcelona by beating Leganes 1-0 at home on Saturday (March 9) as coach Diego Simeone rotated his squad in preparation for next week's Champions League game against Juventus.
Midfielder Saul Niguez struck the only goal of the match, following up to score on the rebound in the 50th minute after his penalty was saved.
Atletico, who travel to Serie A champions Juventus on Tuesday defending a 2-0 lead in the last-16 second leg, were without first-choice defenders Lucas Hernandez, Diego Godin and Filipe Luis, allowing 21-year-old Colombian full back Andres Solano to make his debut.
Simeone withdrew talismanic forward and usual penalty taker Antoine Griezmann at halftime, bringing on Saul in his place, and he left in-form striker Alvaro Morata on the bench to keep him fresh for the trip to Turin.
The win took second-placed Atletico on to 56 points, four behind leaders Barcelona who play Rayo Vallecano later on Saturday, and eight clear of Real Madrid, who visit Real Valladolid on Sunday.
Atletico coach Simeone admitted he had one eye on the Juventus match.
"We try to win every game while also looking after our needs and that's how I managed the game today," he told a news conference.
"It's normal, because Tuesday's game is very important but whenever we plan ahead we always try to ensure we know what to do in the first game, we play in the way we think is most appropriate and we try to win it."
Atletico got their breakthrough when Angel Correa was fouled by Kenneth Omeruo in the area and Saul produced a soft shot from the spot which was parried by Andriy Lunin.
Leganes, whose players wore their mothers' names on the back of their shirts the day after International Women's Day, had a penalty appeal turned down in added time when Jose Arnaiz went over from a challenge from Rodrigo.
"I'm a bit frustrated because it was a very even game, they created very few chances although we didn't create much either," said Leganes coach Mauricio Pellegrino.
"The penalty decision changed the game and made things very difficult for us, and we lacked that cutting edge you need in a game like this."

Sanchez among six on Solskjaer's clear-out list

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could discard as many as six players, including Alexis Sanchez, this summer as the Manchester United manager targets a right-back and central defender to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season.
The summer window will be the Norwegian's first as the permanent boss and he is willing to sell Sanchez, 30, who has proved a failure with only three league goals since joining from Arsenal in January last year in a swop deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The Chile international's salary of £350,000 (S$473,670) a week may prove an obstacle to any potential transfer, though, with the forward's contract running until 2022.
United's broad transfer policy is to bring in three players and sell three each summer, but that number may be doubled in both instances given that the club are some way behind their rivals.
It would represent the biggest turnover of players since 2015, when Louis van Gaal sold six senior players and allowed Tom Cleverley and goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard to leave on free transfers, and bought six full internationals.
Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian will be sold.
Antonio Valencia, 33, the club captain, has also been told that his contract, which expires in June, will not be renewed.
Juan Mata and Ander Herrera are also out of contract in the summer and the club are not close to agreeing deals with either player.
Although Herrera, 29, has become a regular under Solskjaer, United are seeking a top-class central midfielder as a regular alongside Paul Pogba, whom the manager rates as key to a credible title challenge next season.
Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez is among their top targets, with the Spain international, 24, wanting to move to England this summer.
United will not allow goalkeeper David de Gea to leave this summer even though he has 14 months left on his deal and Real Madrid are interested in signing him.
Despite having been in negotiations for 18 months, United are confident that the Spain international, 28, will commit to the club.
They also want to sign a right-back, at least one centre-half, a forward and one or two midfielders, depending on Herrera's decision.
Ideally, Solskjaer would like to buy more British players and develop a home-grown core to his team, just like his former manager Alex Ferguson used to.
Declan Rice, the West Ham midfielder, is on his wish list, as is Callum Hudson-Odoi, the Chelsea forward, who has 14 months left on his contract.
Jadon Sancho, the Borussia Dortmund winger, has also been linked while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the 21-year-old Crystal Palace and England Under-21 defender, is being considered for the right-back slot.
