Spurs are not a one-man team

There is a problem with coining a soundbite. Pep Guardiola was the man who branded Tottenham the "Harry Kane team".And, on Wednesday, the one-man team without the one man eliminated his Manchester City from the Champions League.

'Brilliant' Foden to the fore for City

'Brilliant' Foden to the fore for City

LONDON • The 4-1 scoreline was anything but comfortable for Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola knows that in Phil Foden, he has a "player who is ready to play".
The Spaniard sang the burgeoning talent's praises for producing a "brilliant" display against League Two minnows Newport County, after the 18-year-old scored twice on Saturday to help City reach the FA Cup quarter-finals and keep alive their bid for an unprecedented quadruple this season.
Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez scored the other goals as the Premier League champions left it late to break the home team's brave resistance.
Guardiola told reporters afterwards: "Today was a good test for him, with second balls, long balls, he had to adapt.
"He learnt a lot, I'm sure, and he helped us to win the game with two incredible goals.
"We know that he's a guy who (is) close to the box and has this mentality to score goals, and he has the ability to do that. He was top."
Although City dominated possession, the visitors endured "a really tough game", with City clinging on to a one-goal lead with only two minutes of normal time remaining after Padraig Amond, capitalising on a mistake by Aymeric Laporte, lobbed Ederson.

MANY TALENTS
With second balls, long balls, he had to adapt. He learnt a lot, I'm sure, and he helped us to win the game with two incredible goals. We know that he's a guy who (is) close to the box and has this mentality to score goals, and he has the ability to do that. He was top.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Manchester City manager, on his player Phil Foden.

However, Foden and Mahrez struck again for City to end hopes of a Newport fightback, and Guardiola, who picked a strong team, was full of praise for Michael Flynn's men on and off the field.
Asked about the atmosphere at Rodney Parade, the City manager said: "I'm quite surprised. The support of the team was incredible, chanting 'Who are you?' was nice.
"I understand completely why Leicester and Middlesbrough suffer a lot in this stadium. It was tight - we scored the third goal just before 90 minutes. But we knew the game would be tight.
"What they do, they do incredibly. They attack the channels with long balls, in the second balls, they are physical and strong, every throw-in and free kick they are always dangerous because they train a lot and do it really well.
"We opened the scoring in the game and believed it was done. They showed us how incredible they are and a big compliment for them. It was lucky that Phil got the third goal.
"The home crowd was amazing. Winning here, I understand English football today better than ever and how tough the Cup is in these conditions.
"Newport used their strengths and we are not used to playing against that every week. That's why the Cup is so special."
In the other ties, Brighton moved into the quarter-finals for the second successive season as goals from Anthony Knockaert and Jurgen Locadia clinched a 2-1 win over Championship outfit Derby.
Second-tier strugglers Millwall also advanced to the last eight after a 1-0 win at League One side AFC Wimbledon, courtesy of Murray Wallace's headed winner.

Football: Arsenal to meet Napoli, Chelsea draw Slavia Prague in quarter-finals of Europa League

PARIS (AFP) - Arsenal will take on Napoli in the pick of the ties in the quarter-finals of this season's Europa League following Friday's (March 15) draw, as Chelsea were paired with outsiders Slavia Prague.
Unai Emery's team will host Napoli at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg on April 11, with the return in Italy a week later.
It is a tough draw for the Gunners, with Carlo Ancelotti's Napoli currently second in Serie A - they were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage despite beating Liverpool at home and drawing twice with Paris Saint-Germain.
The winners of that tie will go on to a semi-final against the winners of an all-Spanish quarter-final between local rivals Valencia and Villarreal.
Both LaLiga sides defeated Russian opposition in the last 16, with Valencia edging out Krasnodar and Villarreal, who are struggling domestically, knocking out Zenit St Petersburg.
Before winning the Europa League three years running with Sevilla between 2014 and 2016, Emery really came to prominence during three years in charge of Valencia. He led them to three consecutive third-place finishes in La Liga between 2010 and 2012.
Emery and Ancelotti are both former Paris St Germain coaches, but the latter may have wished for a match-up with another of his old sides, Chelsea.
Instead, the west London club will face Slavia, heading to the capital of the Czech Republic for the first leg on April 11.
Chelsea, winners of the Europa League in 2013, will fancy their chances of advancing, although they would be wise to beware a Slavia side who are top of the Czech league and knocked out Sevilla in the last 16.
The winners of that tie will go through to a semi-final against either Benfica or dark horses Eintracht Frankfurt.
Benfica, who dropped out of this season's Champions League at the group stage, lost to Chelsea in the 2013 Europa League final and were then beaten by Sevilla on penalties in the final a year later.
Eintracht are a dangerous prospect, and the only German survivor in any European competition this season. The 1980 Uefa Cup winners, and runners-up in the European Cup in 1960, won the German Cup last season and are fresh from eliminating Inter Milan in the last 16.
This year's Europa League final will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 29.
The winners will secure passage to next season's Champions League group stage.
Quarter-final draw
Arsenal v Napoli
Villarreal v Valencia
Benfica v Eintracht Frankfurt
Slavia Prague v Chelsea
The first legs will be played on April 11, and the return legs on April 18.

Football: Klopp hails 'best night' of his life after ending final hex

MADRID (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp revelled in the biggest night of his managerial career on Saturday (June 1) after winning Liverpool's sixth Champions League title, ending a run of six straight losses in finals.
Klopp had lost his two previous Champions League finals, against Bayern Munich as Borussia Dortmund boss in 2013 and last year against Real Madrid, the 2016 Europa League final and three domestic cup finals in Germany and England.
"I'm so happy for the boys, I'm so happy for my family, they suffer every year when we go to a final... they deserve it more than anybody," Klopp said to BT Sport.
"It's maybe the best night of my life."
Liverpool clinched their first European trophy since 2005 after a poor contest with fellow Premier League outfit Spurs, and Klopp hailed his side's guts to win the title despite obvious tiredness.
"Did you ever see a team like this, fighting with no fuel in the tank any more?" a jubilant Klopp added.
"This is great for our development because it's always like we'd be doing good steps but people say 'so what you didn't win anything'."

Managers in Germany are usually doused in beer after winning a trophy but when asked about that tradition, Klopp laughed: "Usually 20 minutes after the game I'm already half pissed, and here I didn't even get a water!"

Football: Home United beat Lao Toyota 1-0 to move up to third in AFC Cup Group H

Football: Home United beat Lao Toyota 1-0 to move up to third in AFC Cup Group H

SINGAPORE - Home United breathed life into their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup campaign after beating Lao Toyota 1-0 yesterday, but concerns linger over the team's ability to score goals.
The win, courtesy of a header from defender Abdil Qaiyyim before 1,227 fans at Jalan Besar Stadium, saw the Protectors create enough chances to put the Group H fixture to bed before settling for a solitary strike.
Without injured attackers Shahril Ishak (ankle) and Song Ui-Young (groin) and playing wide midfielder Hafiz Nor as a makeshift striker, Home's blunt cutting edge could yet return to haunt them later in the competition.
"With the chances we had, another goal would make this game safe for the team if we had a clinical finisher tonight," rued Protectors' coach Saswadimata Dasuki.
"The main thing now is to go to Laos (April 17) and get the three points. After that, we will go on against Kaya (Iloilo) and (PSM) Makassar.
Home had earlier drawn 1-1 with Indonesia Liga 1 runners-up Makassar and lost 5-0 to Philippine National League runners-up Kaya. The win moved the Singapore Premier League runners-up to third in Group H on four points, one point behind leaders Kaya and Makassar.
Against Lao Toyota, Hafiz, Adam Swandi, Izzdin Shafiq and Aqhari Abdullah all had shooting opportunities, but were unable go beat goalkeeper Outthilath Nammakhoth.
The game also became a duel between Hami Syahin and the Laotian custodian as the midfielder kept taking shots from distance to no avail.
Home finally found the net in first-half stoppage time when left-back Ho Wai Loon's floated a free kick to the far post for centre-back Abdil to head home emphatically.
Saswa said: "The most important thing is to get the three points. It was very risky at 1-0 as Lao Toyota never gave up. Credit to them, they kept coming at us till the last minute."
After seeing his players battle the full 90 minutes, Lao Toyota coach Jun Fukuda was disappointed, saying: "We came for three points but we couldn't score."
Elsewhere, Tampines Rovers thrashed Cambodian champions Nagaworld FC 5-1 in Phnom Penh to lead Group F with seven points from three games.
