Football: Sala remembered as Cardiff make painful return to action

LONDON (AFP) - A minute's silence was held before Cardiff's first match on Tuesday (Jan 29) since the plane carrying the club's record signing Emiliano Sala disappeared over the Channel Islands over a week ago.
After completing a £15 million (S$26 million) move from Nantes on Jan 19, Sala was on his way from France to take part in his first training session with Cardiff two days later when the aircraft carrying the Argentine and pilot David Ibbotson lost contact.
Visiting Cardiff fans at Arsenal's Emirates stadium unveiled a banner reading: "We never saw you play and never saw you score but Emiliano our beautiful bluebird we will love you forever more."
The captains of both sides laid a bouquet of flowers on the pitch before kick-off, while Argentina shirts and flags were waved among the visiting support.
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock described the past week as the toughest of his career having helped broker the deal that brought Sala to the club.
"I've been in football management for 40 years and it's been by far the most difficult week in my career, by an absolute mile," said Warnock on Monday.
"It's been a traumatic week and even now I can't get my head around the situation. It's probably hit me harder than anyone else as I've met the lad and talked to him for the last six to eight weeks."

Guernsey police suspended the official search for the plane on Thursday, but a privately-funded search has continued.
Top players were among the more than 4,500 contributors to a crowdfunding page which has raised over €360,000 (S$550,000) to look for Ibbotson and Sala.
In Arsenal's match programme, Gunners club captain Laurent Koscielny compared the game to his experience of representing France against England in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks in 2015.
"It is hard to get into the game at times. You have to be professional, but you also feel the emotion, the sadness around you," said Koscielny.
"There are things far more important than football and you don't know what tomorrow will bring. I am very happy that the searches are now continuing."

LONDON (DPA) - Pep Guardiola expects Kevin De Bruyne to miss this week's Manchester derby after the midfielder limped off with an injury on Saturday (April 20).
De Bruyne appeared to stumble as he shot in the first half of Manchester City's 1-0 win over Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium.
The Belgium international immediately sat on the pitch holding his left leg and was replaced by Fernandinho.
"I didn't speak with him or the doctors," Guardiola said when asked if De Bruyne would be available against Manchester United on Wednesday.
"It was something muscular... I don't know how big the impact is.
"We will see tomorrow but I think for the next game, he will be out."
The win lifted City top of the table above Liverpool, who visit Cardiff on Sunday, with four games remaining.

Football: Angela Merkel's aide 'sad' about Ozil's wedding invite to Turkish President Erdogan

BERLIN (AFP) - Angela Merkel's chief of staff on Monday (March 18) joined the growing chorus of criticism of Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil for reportedly inviting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to his wedding this summer as his witness.
The 30-year-old Ozil, who has Turkish family roots, sparked controversy last May when he was photographed with Mr Erdogan, raising questions about the footballer's loyalty to Germany on the eve of their disastrous World Cup campaign.
After 92 appearances for Germany, including a key role in the 2014 World Cup victory, Ozil suddenly quit the national squad last July, accusing German football officials of racism.
On Sunday, Germany's top-selling tabloid Bild reported that Ozil, 30, and his fiancee Amine Gulse, 25, a former Miss Turkey and model, personally presented Mr Erdogan in Istanbul with an invitation to their wedding this summer, asking the Turkish leader to appear as the footballer's witness.
The invitation immediately drew sharp criticism in Germany, whose government has been sharply at odds with Ankara over a range of human rights questions in recent years.
Helge Braun, a politician and chief of staff to German Chancellor Merkel, told Bild it "makes one sad" that Ozil would make a such a move despite having already been sharply criticised by the German public over his first meeting with Mr Erdogan.
"The fact that this has continued will have disappointed a lot of football fans - me too!" said Braun.

The politician accepted Ozil's was "a private decision" which one must respect, but appealed to the footballer as a role model, especially for young Turks in Germany.
"Footballers are symbolic figures in our society, with whom people identify with much more than ministers," added Braun. "And so the question is raised: How much does someone wearing the German national jersey stand for Germany?"
Braun's comments come after German politician Cem Ozdemir, whose parents are Turkish, said on Sunday that he found it "inappropriate" for Ozil to invite the Turkish leader.
Ozil - one of the world's most popular footballers on social media with 31 million followers on his official Facebook account, 19.1 million on his Instagram account and 23.9 million on Twitter - has an obligation as a role model, added Ozdemir.
Another lawmaker, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, was equally unimpressed by his invitation to Mr Erdogan.
"The wedding is the private matter of Mesut Ozil, but he is a world star, who people look up to, so of course it's a pity from a political point of view," Lambsdorff told newspaper Welt.
Ozil has dated Gulse since 2017 and the couple announced their engagement in June 2018.
The Arsenal midfielder, a third-generation German, whipped up a political storm when he was pictured alongside Mr Erdogan last May.
Criticism intensified after the red-faced defending champions crashed out of the first round of the World Cup in Russia.
In the wake of the World Cup fiasco, Ozil announced his resignation from the national squad, saying: "I am German when we win, an immigrant when we lose."

Football: Hazard fires Chelsea into the League Cup semi-finals

LONDON (REUTERS) - An 84th-minute Eden Hazard goal, that spun into the net after a heavy deflection, earned Chelsea a place in the League Cup semi-finals after a 1-0 win over Bournemouth in an entertaining tie on Wednesday (Dec 19).
Chelsea had buzzed round the Bournemouth goal for much of the game but it was not until substitute Hazard came on with half an hour to go that they looked creative and decisive enough to break through.
Chelsea had piled on the pressure from the start and there were good chances for Olivier Giroud, Ross Barkley, who forced a diving save from Artur Boruc and Willian, who surged forward from the halfway line after 30 minutes only for Boruc to block his rising shot.
Bournemouth looked dangerous on the break and Callum Wilson ran through on goal in the 17th minute but pulled his shot wide.
A scampering run from Jordon Ibe opened up the Chelsea defence 20 minutes later and Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga had to fly to his left to keep out Lys Mousset's curling shot.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek, playing in a forward role, looked certain to break the deadlock early in the second half after rounding two players but his shot flew inches past Boruc's post.
Chelsea brought on first Pedro then Hazard and it was a combination of the Spaniard and Belgium's Hazard that made the goal.
It was the first home game since alleged racist taunts against Manchester City's Raheem Sterling prompted an outcry and Chelsea banned four fans.
Chelsea Chairman Bruce Buck took a page in the programme to condemn racism and the atmosphere in the ground was lively but appeared good humoured with no added security in evidence.

No room for complacency

No room for complacency

LONDON • While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will always have a place in the hearts of Manchester United fans for his winner in the 1999 Champions League final to seal the treble, the club's new manager has insisted maintaining that success would supplant his achievements as a player.
At his first pre-match press conference after handed the full-time reins on a three-year deal on Thursday, the Norwegian admitted he was "so honoured and privileged" to get the Old Trafford job.
Ahead of today's Premier League home game with Watford, Solskjaer, who confirmed assistant Mike Phelan and the rest of the coaching staff would be retained, and that he had spoken to former manager Alex Ferguson, said: "People talk about a dream job, in my case, this is literally that.
"I have always visualised myself as a possible Manchester United manager. Maybe it was a naive dream, but it has always been my ultimate one.
"I don't look back too much, I always prefer to look forward, but obviously, I enjoyed my time playing for United and I was quite successful.
"If I can leave here as a successful manager, I'll be happier still. Bringing success in the form of trophies would count as an even bigger achievement."

THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE
As long as we are in it (the Champions League), we have a chance. It will be tough (against Barcelona) but we have climbed mountains before.
The short-term target has to be (top-four) qualification for next season, though.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United manager, on his targets.

Although Solskjaer is realistic enough to accept a top-four finish would be a satisfactory outcome this season - qualification for the Champions League had looked unlikely under Jose Mourinho - he also promised that standards would not slip under his watch.
He added: "Players who get complacent, they never last at this club anyway. I am the same, I can't be complacent. We are looking forward, we have got to work harder.
"I have got some targets, I want a Manchester United team that is one of the hardest-working teams in the league, one of the fittest teams in the league and that then will bring results. The players know my expectations on the future.
"As long as we are in it (the Champions League), we have a chance. It will be tough (against Barcelona) but we have climbed mountains before.
"The short-term target has to be (top-four) qualification for next season, though. We have improved greatly in three months and given ourselves a great chance of finishing fourth or even third."
And Solskjaer is already looking beyond the summer, revealing that "to lift the Premier League trophy again is what we expect, what we're used to and what we have done so many times".
The Red Devils have not won the league since Ferguson's farewell season in 2013. While he conceded "it is not going to happen overnight", expectations at the club are such that "we can't wait too many years".
Former United striker Dimitar Berbatov agreed, telling Betfair yesterday that "the pressure is going to be huge as the difficult work starts now".
He said: "Ole will now be fighting to keep the job, come next season, they need to be targeting the title. This is Manchester United we are talking about. He absolutely needs to be fighting for all the big prizes next season."

Football: Arsenal edge past 10-man Watford, move into top four

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal moved into the Premier League top four, but made hard work of seeing off 10-man Watford 1-0 thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's fortunate early opener on Monday (April 15).
Aubameyang profited from an error by Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster as he blasted an attempted clearance in off the Gabon international.
Watford captain Troy Deeney was then shown a straight red card after just 11 minutes, but the Gunners failed to make the most of their man advantage and were fortunate as the hosts twice hit the woodwork.
However, Unai Emery's men held out for a first clean sheet away from home in the Premier League this season to move ahead of Chelsea on goal difference into fourth.
Arsenal also edge to within a point of north London rivals Tottenham and two clear of Manchester United in the four-way battle for the two remaining Champions League places behind Liverpool and Manchester City.
FA Cup finalists Watford were already shorn of the man who helped book their place at Wembley against Manchester City next month as Gerard Deulofeu missed out through injury and Javi Gracia's side did themselves little favours early on.
Firstly, Foster dallied as Aubameyang closed in to concede a comical opener.
And within seconds, Deeney was punished for an elbow into the face of Lucas Torreira.
Arsenal now have just three days to prepare for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final away to Napoli and should have ensured an easier finish.
Aubameyang saw another effort deflected behind at the end of a sweeping counter-attack, while Foster also turned over a fierce Alex Iwobi shot.
However, the 10 men were still causing problems to a defensively vulnerable Arsenal at the other end.
Craig Cathcart's shot was turned onto the post by Bernd Leno and the German goalkeeper was also a full stretch to turn an Etienne Capoue free-kick behind.
Emery introduced Mesut Ozil at half-time in an attempt to improve Arsenal's final ball with so much space to counter-attack into, but to little avail.
Iwobi looked to have provided the perfect cross to pick out Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but Foster made amends for his earlier error by spreading himself to make a brilliant save from the Armenian.
Arsenal's terrible away record is why they face such a tight battle to secure Champions League football next season.
And they could have thrown just a second away league win since November away as Adam Masina crashed a 25-yard strike off the crossbar before Andre Gray miscontrolled Daryl Janmaat's pass when clean through on Leno.
Gray was then denied by a last-ditch challenge from Ainsley Maitland-Niles after rounding Leno, but without the firepower of Deulofeu and Deeney, Watford's brave effort fell just short.
