We're not favourites against Germany: Van Dijk
AMSTERDAM • The Netherlands will not be lulled into a false sense of security when they face a struggling, new-look Germany in their Euro 2020 qualifier in Amsterdam today, Virgil van Dijk has said.
The Dutch beat the Germans 3-0 at home last October and came from behind with two late goals to force a 2-2 draw away in Gelsenkirchen one month later to win a place in June's Nations League Finals.
Germany, meanwhile, were relegated from the top division of that competition.
The contrast in form continued when the Netherlands beat Belarus 4-0 in Rotterdam on Thursday in their opening Group C qualifier, a day after Germany proved unconvincing in a 1-1 draw at home to Serbia in a warm-up international friendly.
"It does look like the Germans are still in a building phase but don't forget that the Dutch side is also going through the same process," defender van Dijk said on the eve of the game at the Amsterdam Arena.
"The Germans still have fantastic players, even if they might be talking over there (in Germany) about a crisis. We also had a spell like that, where things did not go for us," added the 27-year-old, referring to his team's failure to reach the 2016 European Championship in France and last year's World Cup in Russia.
"That was not a good phase. But we must worry about ourselves and not Germany.
"I don't think we are favourites."
The Dutch are, however, in confident mood after Thursday's win.
"At times we played really good football but it can, and it must be, a lot better on Sunday," said van Dijk.
By dumping three World Cup winners in Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Thomas Muller, Germany coach Joachim Low is following the process undertaken by the Netherlands since their third-place finish at the World Cup in 2014.
The Dutch failed to reach the subsequent two major tournaments, so a number of new names are now in Ronald Koeman's squad.
Low is trying something similar with the likes of Bayer Leverkusen's Kai Havertz, 19 and Paris Saint-Germain's Thilo Kehrer, 22.
But the draw with Serbia shows they are still a work in progress with the passing and missed chances remaining a problem.
"The Dutch are obviously in better form," said Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Aston Villa returned to the Premier League, after a three year absence, beating Derby County 2-1 in the Championship playoff final at Wembley on Monday (May 27).Â
Goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn put Villa 2-0 up before Martyn Waghorn pulled a goal back for Derby in the 81st minute but Dean Smith’s side held on for the victory against intense pressure.Â
The playoff final is considered the most lucrative single game of football in the world, earning Villa an estimated 170 million pounds (S$296.31 million) in revenue.Â
Norwich City and Sheffield United had already secured promotion to the top flight for next season after finishing in the top two positions in the second tier Championship.Â
El Ghazi opened the scoring just before the break with a diving header from cross from right by Ahmed Elmohamady.Â
McGinn doubled the advantage in the 59th minute when a deflected shot from El Ghazi looped into the area and Derby keeper Kelle Roos came out but was unable to capture the ball under challenge from McGinn who bundled the ball home.Â
Derby, managed by former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard, got back in the game when substitute Jack Marriott’s low shot was turned in by Waghorn and then piled on the pressure in the final minutes but were unable to break through.

Football: Gabriel Jesus fires as Manchester City snatch top spot from Liverpool
LONDON (AFP) - Pep Guardiola welcomed Gabriel Jesus’ return to form as the Brazilian struck twice in a 3-1 win over Everton as Manchester City leapfrogged Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League.
Jesus hadn’t scored a Premier League goal for four months before opening the scoring midway through the first-half and bulleted home a header to double City’s lead early in the second-half.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin briefly gave Everton hope, but Raheem Sterling came off the bench to make the game safe with his first touch and move City two points ahead of Liverpool, who host Manchester United on Sunday.
“Strikers need to score goals,†said Guardiola of Jesus’s man-of-the-match performance.Â
“The difference today was that he scored as he was in better positions.â€Â
Guardiola could even afford the luxury of leaving Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero on the bench on their return from injury as the Catalan coach again shuffled his pack for the busy festive period.
But fears in recent weeks that City lack a predator in front of goal when Aguero is absent were quashed by two fine finishes from Jesus.
“My confidence is back because my family is here and it helps me a lot. I needed my family in this moment,†said the Brazilian international.
“This year it (the title) will be more difficult because the (other) clubs will play better. I think it is very important we have come back to first position.â€
With temperatures approaching freezing in Manchester, City were nearly caught cold by a rare Everton break early on when Richarlison fired the first big chance of the game over from Lucas Digne’s cross.
“The biggest chance was our chance with Richarlison,†Everton boss Marco Silva said.
“Against these teams we have to be effective when we create opportunities to score.â€Â
And Everton also played a big part in their own downfall at the other end when Jesus opened the scoring.
Yerry Mina’s hopeful punt gifted away possession and the Colombian then played Jesus onside as the Brazilian ran onto Sane’s pass to fire low past Pickford.
The England number one handed Liverpool victory in the Merseyside derby earlier this month, but Pickford wasn’t so charitable to City as he made an excellent save to prevent Riyad Mahrez doubling the hosts’ lead just before half-time.
The champions had to wait just five minutes after the break to make it 2-0, when a patient build-up again found Sane on the left and the German’s cross was met by a powerful header from Jesus.
Everton had barely offered any threat in the second period before they got back into the game 25 minutes from time, Calvert-Lewin’s header from a high-hanging Digne cross flicking off Fabian Delph and past the helpless Ederson.
Guardiola responded by sending on Sterling for Sane and in a week when the England international has bravely spoken out about the alleged racist abuse he suffered last weekend by Chelsea fans, he also made his mark on the field by scoring immediately.
“I think Raheem has handled the last few years in terms of situations and rumours, about him or his family or the colour of his skin very calmly,†added Guardiola.
“I admire him and appreciate that it’s not easy for him. He’s loved by all staff and in the locker room.â€Â
Jesus was involved again as he freed Fernandinho inside the area and his cross picked out the unmarked Sterling to score a rare header.
De Bruyne then made his first appearance for six weeks – just his fourth in the Premier League all season, all of which have come as a substitute – after lengthy absences for two knee injuries.
Other than defeat to Chelsea last weekend, City have barely missed a beat without the Belgian, but the return of their player of the year in last season’s record-breaking campaign is an early Christmas present for Guardiola ahead of Liverpool’s visit to the Etihad on Jan 3.

Football: Ex-FAS general secretary Winston Lee withdraws candidacy for AFC exco seat
SINGAPORE - Former Football Association of Singapore (FAS) general secretary Winston Lee withdrew his candidacy for one of nine seats on the executive committee members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), just before the Asian football body's congress in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (April 6).
The FAS said in a statement that Lee, 53, informed them of his decision on Saturday morning.
"With his withdrawal, the three remaining candidates for AFC Exco (Asean zone) will be voted in uncontested," said the FAS in a media statement.
The three are Hamidin Amin (Malaysia), Tran Quoc Tuan (Vietnam) and Chris Nikou (Australia).
Lee, who was a vice-president at the AFC, was embroiled in a Commercial Affairs Department probe that shook the local fraternity ahead of the FAS elections in 2017.
The investigation into a possible misuse of funds was sparked by the revelation of a $500,000 donation made by Tiong Bahru Football Club, through the FAS, to the Asean Football Federation (AFF) for a Football Management System.
A police raid was carried out on four locations - the FAS' Jalan Besar headquarters, and the clubhouses of S-League/Singapore Premier League club Hougang United, "sit-out" S-League club Woodlands Wellington and National Football League club Tiong Bahru FC.

All three clubs were connected to Bill Ng, who was then chairman of both Hougang and Tiong Bahru, and who unsuccessfully challenged Lim Kia Tong for the FAS presidency in 2017.
Lee was one of four people arrested - the others being Ng, his wife Bonnie and former FAS president Zainudin Nordin - but no charges have been brought in relation to the matter.
At Saturday's AFC congress, Sheikh Salman Sheikh Salman Ebrahim al-Khalifa, a member of Bahrain's ruling family, was voted in as president unopposed.

Singapore equalised in the 67th minute when Shahdan's free-kick eluded everyone and beat Mango. But the Lions continued to display poor technique in the second half as Zulfahmi Arifin's casual pass in the 75th minute resulted in a fast break for the visitors, and Benjamin Totori beat Safuwan Baharudin and Izwan at the near post to restore the Solomon Islands' lead.

Brazil win but Neymar out of Copa America
RIO DE JANEIRO • Brazil's 2-0 friendly win over Qatar in Brasilia on Wednesday came at a heavy cost after they lost Neymar for this month's Copa America because of an ankle ligament injury.
The 27-year-old forward limped off in the 17th minute after he appeared to twist his right ankle and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) later confirmed that he would miss the tournament, where Chile are defending champions.
"Neymar was evaluated and underwent scans that confirmed a ligament rupture in the ankle," the CBF said in a statement. "Due to the seriousness of the injury, Neymar will not recover in time to participate in Copa America in Brazil."
The injury capped a horrible few days for the Paris Saint-Germain striker, who was stripped of the Brazil captaincy last month and was last weekend accused of rape in a case that has dominated the headlines in his homeland.
Yesterday, newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo reported Mastercard saying it was suspending its use of Neymar in advertising until the situation is "cleared up".
Brazil were already leading 1-0 courtesy of Richarlison's 16th-minute header when Neymar departed and Gabriel Jesus added the second eight minutes later from close range.
But all attention was focused on Neymar, the world's most expensive player and a polarising figure.
He has suffered several serious injuries dating back to 2014, when a brutal knee in the back from Colombian Juan Camilo Zuniga kept him out of Brazil's World Cup semi-final defeat by Germany.
Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro, a football fan who attended Wednesday's game, was pictured with a smiling Neymar as the player received treatment in a hospital.
The leader's good wishes for a speedy recovery were to no avail, though, and Brazil will face Bolivia in their Copa America opener next Friday in Sao Paulo without their best player.

LONDON • Nigel Clough managed to retain his sense of humour after Burton's 9-0 trouncing by Manchester City, stating his hope that Pep Guardiola had "more than one glass" of wine on offer for the post-match drink.
The third-tier side's heavy loss in the League Cup semi-final first leg at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday ended their hopes of reaching the final, yet he remained light-hearted when asked what his opposite number told him at full-time.
"He said, 'Come in for a glass of wine'. I hope he's got more than a glass," said the visiting manager, who insists his team will use the return leg in a fortnight to celebrate reaching the last four.
"Do I wish we hadn't played? Not at all, we have made history in getting this far. It wasn't about tonight, it was about the achievement of getting here. We kept going right to the end, the City fans were shouting, 'We want 10'. And we stopped them, that's a positive for us."
Gabriel Jesus struck four goals as Kevin de Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez were also on target against Clough's League One side, with victory leaving their visit to the Pirelli Stadium on Jan 23 a mere formality.
City manager Guardiola said his team's merciless approach in the game was a form of respect for their opponents and the competition.
City were 4-0 up at half-time but continued to rip apart their vastly outclassed opponents as they ran up the biggest margin of victory in an English Cup semi-final.
"If you forget to continue (attacking) you don't have respect for your opponent or for the competition," said the Spaniard.
"We spoke about it at half-time, to try to score more goals. That is the best way to respect the competition and opponent. The best way is to do what you have to do.
"The difference between the Premier League teams and League One teams, of course the quality of the players no doubt about that, but especially the rhythm. When you have high intensity and rhythm for 90 minutes, the physicality is higher and we scored quickly."
Guardiola also praised the club's achievement in reaching the last four, a run which saw them beat Premier League side Burnley and Championship teams Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough.
"Burton have had an incredible tournament. They have to be so proud, they did so well," he said.
Clough, son of Nottingham Forest's late European Cup-winning manager Brian Clough, added that he was not surprised at the outcome because of "the gulf between the two teams".
City were rightly lauded by Clough for their technical class and football rooted in total adventure but their work rate was also of the highest order.
They can outrun opponents as well as outpass them. They have the strength in depth to make changes, with only four regular first-teamers starting, and still be far too good for their opposition.
Ilkay Gundogan was doing what he does best, spraying around some exquisite passes when given time.
David Silva was gliding around, passing and moving, finding room and friendly feet, small but perfectly performing.
De Bruyne was supposedly easing his way back to full fitness but was in full Rolls-Royce mode between the boxes for an hour.
There had to be some sympathy for Burton's players facing such superior opposition. They had desperately wanted to cherish the memories of this League Cup semi-final and maybe, in time, they will.
Not at the final whistle on Wednesday, though. When Mahrez prodded in the ninth goal in the 83rd minute, they were just glad a 10th was not forthcoming.

City must beat Liverpool to stay in title race: Guardiola
LONDON • Win or bust. That was the stark message from Pep Guardiola to his Manchester City players, that failure to beat Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday would effectively end their title tilt.
The Premier League champions revived their bid to retain their title with a 3-1 win at Southampton on Sunday that followed shock defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester.
City are still seven points behind leaders Liverpool and Guardiola knows his side have zero margin for error now, saying: "We knew it, that with the position of Liverpool, if we drop points, then it (the title race) is over.
"It would be almost impossible. Of course, they are going to drop points but not too many.
"If you want to be there as far as possible until the end, we have to remember what happened last season and this as well - apart from the last few days."
He was adamant he had not lost confidence in his side, despite the Palace and Leicester reverses.
"How can I doubt them?," said the Spaniard. "Football is like this. We make 30 exceptional minutes again, especially without the ball, we create chances to go 2-0 or 3-0, we concede one goal.
"Against Palace and Leicester, they were happy with 1-1 and they found a second one.
"I always judge our intentions of the game and always our intentions are to try."
But Guardiola also admitted the monumental task facing his side as they were facing "the best team in Europe or the world".
He added: "That's why it's a challenge for us (on) Thursday, to try and win and sustain this position as far as possible to arrive at the end of the season fighting for the title.
"We won a lot of games but unfortunately we lost two and we have a rival (Liverpool) who at the moment is the best."
City may again be without Kevin de Bruyne against Liverpool after he missed the Saints game with a muscle problem, but Guardiola rejected suggestions that their victory over Ralph Hasenhuttl's men had "sent a message" to the Reds.
He told reporters: "Liverpool know what they have to do, we know what we have to do (on) Thursday.
"Of course, it's important to win. It's almost a final for us and we want to be there as long as possible for the Premier League.
"I know the distance is big, seven points, especially because they're so solid and consistent, but we're at home.
"Hopefully our people at the Etihad can help, they can support us. Not just for the game, but these players deserve it. What they have done in the last 14 or 15 months, how they defend this club is incredible, it's massive."

NEWCASTLE, England (REUTERS) - Newcastle United's 2-0 win over 10-man Huddersfield Town on Saturday (Feb 23) eased their Premier League safety fears and sent the Terriers hurtling ever faster towards relegation to the Championship.
The top-flight's basement club looked lost again as soon as captain Tommy Smith was given a 20th-minute red card and second-half goals from Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez sent them spinning to a 13th defeat in their last 14 league matches.
The St James' Park faithful also found a new hero to cheer as they eased their way clear of the relegation zone, offering a standing ovation to record signing Miguel Almiron after the Paraguayan made a striking full debut.
A fourth straight league loss for Huddersfield's new manager Jan Siewert left the Terriers stranded six points behind Fulham and 14 adrift of 17th-placed Cardiff City as Newcastle, with a third straight home win under Rafa Benitez, moved up to 14th.
Almiron, making his first start for Newcastle after his club record £20 million (S$35 million) move from Atlanta United, came off to rapturous cheers after tormenting Huddersfield's defence for 80 minutes.
The full debut of the Paraguayan was eagerly awaited by the home fans with the 25-year-old being their biggest signing since Michael Owen 14 years earlier.
Almiron delivered handsomely and quickly, chipping over Jonas Lossl and hitting the post early on before having another effort cleared off the line.
He was also the victim of Smith's lunging, over-the-top challenge which earned the visiting captain a straight red card before his speed and trickery continued to torment a depleted rearguard.
Only Newcastle's finishing - they hit the woodwork four times and were denied by brilliant saves from Lossl - let them down as they dominated proceedings.
A minute after the break, though, Rondon broke the deadlock with a low strike before laying on the 52nd-minute clincher from Spaniard Perez.
Benitez was left delighted by Almiron's impact.
"His contribution in terms of work rate was really good," he told the BBC.
"He will be pleased with his performance and the fans will be too. He will give us a different characteristics and different options.
"We needed to win and did it creating a lot of chances. We had 29 attempts which is not bad - their keeper did well. But it does not matter because we got the win."
Siewert recognised Smith's sending-off as the turning-point.
"The red card broke our neck today. Before we had chances and possession but the red card broke our neck," he said.

Spurs will miss Son: Pochettino
LONDON • While Tottenham's ability to remain focused on on-pitch affairs has propelled the club into second place in the Premier League, Mauricio Pochettino knows the upcoming loss of Son Heung-min will be one hurdle Spurs will find hard to overcome.
The London club have dealt admirably with the delays affecting the long-awaited move to their new stadium and speculation that their manager will move to a bigger club, notably Manchester United or Real Madrid, in the summer.
But Pochettino admitted Son's second absence of the season - he will spearhead South Korea's challenge at next month's Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates - will hit their Premier League title challenge hard.
The forward, who missed the start of the season after leading his country to the football gold medal at the Asian Games in August, has scored five goals in his last three games in all competitions.
After Tottenham smashed Bournemouth 5-0 at home in the league on Wednesday, Pochettino hailed the 26-year-old for "doing a fantastic job for the team".
The Argentinian said: "I hope he can keep that level, but you know, in a few weeks, he is going to be away from Tottenham because he needs to go with his national team to Dubai to play the Asian Cup."
Although Son will stay in England until Spurs' league clash against Manchester United at Wembley on Jan 13, he will miss league games against Fulham, Watford and Newcastle.
He will also miss the second leg of their League Cup semi-final with Chelsea should the Taeguk Warriors reach the Cup final on Feb 1.

LONDON (AFP) - Brendan Rodgers says Leicester will do all they can to ensure the club's best players remain at the King Power Stadium this summer.
Harry Maguire has again been linked with a move to Manchester United while there have been rumours about Manchester City and Arsenal interest in fellow England international Ben Chilwell.
However, Leicester manager Rodgers has vowed that the former Premier League champions will do their best to fend off any suitors.
"All I know is that when you have good players, they will always be of interest, and the squad is full of very talented players," Rodgers said.
"All I can do is create an environment so that they enjoy coming to work, where they feel that they can get better.
"From that, they grow and develop. And from then on, if players need to move on from that, it will always be a decision between the club and them."
"At this moment in time, all the players are happy and working well. We want to continue on that path. But knowing how the game works, clubs always lose players, but we will always fight to keep our best players."

Football: Pele remains under 'observation' in Brazil hospital, say doctors
SAO PAULO (AFP) - Pele remains under "observation" in a Brazilian hospital, his doctors said on Thursday (April 11), describing the three-time World Cup winner as "clinically stable".
The latest update on the Brazilian football great's health comes a day after the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo said he would need an operation to remove a "ureteral stone".
The 78-year-old was admitted to the medical facility on Tuesday after he returned from France where he had spent six days in a Paris hospital for a urinary tract infection that required surgery.
Pele "remains clinically stable and in good health", the Sao Paulo hospital said.

Pele, who is widely considered to be the greatest footballer in history, was discharged late Monday from the private American hospital in the Paris suburbs where he had been taken after falling ill following an appearance at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.
Pele, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and perhaps most memorably in Mexico in 1970 when his swashbuckling team re-defined modern football, has had several health scares in recent years.

Football: Solskjaer insists Man United don't fear Camp Nou test after drawing Barca
LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United are not scared of playing the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against at the Camp Nou after drawing Barcelona on Friday (March 15).
United were originally drawn to play at Barcelona in the first leg, which would have given them the safety net of playing the decisive return at Old Trafford.
But with Manchester City due to play their quarter-final second leg against Tottenham at home in the same week, Uefa decided to make United host Barca in the first leg on April 10, after stipulating in advance following advice from local authorities that United and City could not play at home on successive nights.
"I'm probably completely different to 99 per cent of managers, as I prefer away last like we had against PSG (in the previous round)," Solskjaer said.
After losing 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in Manchester, Solskjaer's side claimed a stunning 3-1 second-leg victory in the French capital to progress to the last eight.
"If you can get a decent result at home, then we know we can go away and hurt anyone like we did in Paris," he added.
Having to face Lionel Messi's Barca on their turf in the second leg on April 16 could put United at a disadvantage, as the Catalans have not lost any of their last 30 home games in the competition, winning all but three of those.
Â
But United interim boss Solskjaer insists he is happy to travel to Spain with the tie potentially in the balance after his team showed they could cope with that pressure in the last 16.
"We want these games against the biggest clubs and the biggest teams. We had the final against them in 2009 and 2011 (both of which Barca won) and the semi-final in 2008 when Scholesy (Paul Scholes) scored," Solskjaer said.
"It's these games our fans and this club crave. We are looking forward to this one."
Solskjaer's trip to the Camp Nou will stir happy memories for the former United striker, who scored the dramatic stoppage-time winner in the club's famous Champions League final triumph against Bayern Munich in 1999.

Football: Sergio Ramos double puts Real Madrid within sight of the Copa del Rey semi-finals
MADRID (AFP) - Sergio Ramos scored twice to put Real Madrid on the brink of the Copa del Rey semi-finals as they came from behind to beat Girona 4-2 in a thrilling first leg on Thursday (Jan 24).
Ramos' chipped penalty gave Madrid a 2-1 half-time lead at the Santiago Bernabeu after Lucas Vazquez had cancelled out Anthony Lozano's early strike.
Girona, however, came again, Alex Granell scoring from the spot, only for Ramos to head home with 13 minutes left before Benzema added a fourth to extend the advantage ahead of next week's second leg.
Ramos now has nine goals in all competitions this season and these two were key as Madrid maintained what it is beginning to look like a second revival under coach Santiago Solari.
After a blistering start, Solari oversaw a dip at the turn of the year but his team have now won four out of their last five, the only slip coming in a second-leg defeat to Leganes when progress was already all but secured.
It would be a timely run into form, with Atletico Madrid in La Liga and then Ajax in the Champions League both to come at the start of next month.
Ten points adrift in the league, this competition now represents Madrid's best hope of a domestic trophy this season and Solari's selection seemed to suggest as much.
He picked a strong line-up, which included a recall for the struggling Marcelo while Toni Kroos made the bench, after recovering from injury.
Girona were keener to rotate as Cristhian Stuani, La Liga's third top scorer, was left on the bench ahead of Sunday's game at home to Barcelona.
Madrid were the better side for most of the first half but gave Girona a head-start. Raul Garcia tore away down the left and his cross to the back post found the unmarked Lozano, who could not miss. Marcelo was two yards behind him.
Benzema has been the unsung hero of Madrid's stuttering season and it was his pass that led to the equaliser. Odriozola sped away and pulled back for Vazquez to score.
Girona were on the backfoot. Benzema fired over, Alvaro Odriozola overran with only the keeper to beat and Luka Modric wanted a penalty after Douglas Luiz robbed him of the ball from behind.
Moments later, Vinicius was clipped by Lozano and this time there was no doubt. Ramos chipped the ball down the middle.
Benzema grazed the post from distance and Madrid were so dominant it looked like they might take the tie away from Girona in the second half.
Instead, in the 67th minute, Marcos Llorente, on as a substitute, threw his arm towards the ball at a corner and Alex Granell swept the penalty into the top corner to pull Girona level.
Solari turned to Isco, his last attacking option on the bench but Madrid's third came from their central defender, the assist from their left back.
Marcelo swung in the cross and Ramos climbed high above Marc Muniesa to head home.
Girona were on the ropes and Madrid came again. It was almost a mirror image, this time Vinicius curling a sumptuous ball to the back post where Benzema was left with an open net to tap in a fourth.

City 'best team in Europe'
City 'best team in Europe'
LONDON • Maurizio Sarri has dismissed suggestions Chelsea are still in the title race, claiming this season would be a straight "fight between Liverpool and Manchester City".
While City manager Pep Guardiola has refused to rule the Blues out of contention, the Chelsea boss feels his fourth-placed team, who trail the front runners by 12 points, can only aim "for the top four this season, (and) no more".
At his pre-match press conference ahead of their Premier League clash with the league leaders at the Etihad tomorrow, he said: "Guardiola is in the third season in the Premier League. We have to try to reduce the gap.
"At the moment, City are the best team in Europe. We need to defend very well and to be very fast when we recover the ball.
"They are able to press really very well. If we do it, we can find spaces. But it's very difficult."
The Italian added his players were "lucky" to beat City in December when they ended the champions' 21-match unbeaten run with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
Playing Guardiola's men away remains one of the toughest tasks in English football and Sarri's preparations were not helped by Eden Hazard's midweek admission he had made a decision on his future, with his Chelsea contract expiring in June 2020 and amid repeated links with a move to Real Madrid.
Asked about the speculation, which has continued to swirl over a potential move to the European champions, the 60-year-old said he wanted the Belgium forward to be "happy" wherever his future lies.
He added: "I speak every day with Eden, but I speak with Eden about his position on the pitch.
"I will be really very happy with him if he wants to stay because in my opinion, he's the best in Europe.
"But it's up to him. I want to see him happy. And so, he has to decide."
With Liverpool holding a game in hand, Guardiola is well aware any slip-up at home could hand the initiative back to Jurgen Klopp's men and he urged his players to treat the game like a "final for us".
The 48-year-old told reporters: "We have to play in that way. I have a lot of respect (for Chelsea).
"Everyone must work and create something. When I saw Chelsea in pre-season in (the) Charity Shield, they were already there.
"The season from Chelsea has been exceptional, the Premier League is there, they (still) have a chance to be champions, a lot of games to play and the (League) cup is there as well.
"I see how they play and recognise what they want to do."
Guardiola also backed Argentina striker Sergio Aguero, who is just one hat-trick behind Alan Shearer's league record of 11 after his treble against Arsenal last weekend, to keep "appearing in the key moments" as "important games belong to big players".
He also revealed captain Vincent Kompany and fellow defender Benjamin Mendy would not be fit for the encounter before expressing his shock that the latter was supposedly in Hong Kong, having tagged himself at the city's airport on his Instagram account.
The Spaniard added: "I didn't know it. What? I'll have to install Instagram on my account.
"He said he was going to Paris, but Hong Kong is far away. It will definitely not be okay if he is in Hong Kong."
The Frenchman yesterday clarified on Twitter it was a joke, tweeting: "It was just joking with my Uber driver. I don't want no problems with Pep."

I didn't know it. What? I'll have to install Instagram on my account. He said he was going to Paris, but Hong Kong is far away. It will definitely not be okay if he is in Hong Kong.
PEP GUARDIOLA, responding to a reporter's query on left-back Benjamin Mendy's Instagram story tagging him in Hong Kong.
