Bruised Blues a City concern

Bruised Blues a City concern

LONDON • Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is surprised by Chelsea's revolving-door policy with managers as he prepares for today's League Cup final, the match that could seal the fate of his counterpart Maurizio Sarri.
The Spaniard stated that he enjoyed City's backing in a way the Blues' former manager Antonio Conte never did, and suggested Sarri may encounter the same lack of support.
There has been mounting speculation over Sarri's future in recent weeks, after a mid-season slump best exemplified by the 6-0 humiliation in their league visit to City's Etihad Stadium earlier this month.
Guardiola believes Chelsea should adopt the same sort of long-term view City took when they employed him in 2016.
Comparisons have been drawn with his first season, when City struggled to adapt to his demanding style of play, although he was keen to dismiss the similarities.
"The situation is a little bit different. In my first year, never did the club doubt me. It was never in the media that I'd be sacked if they lose this game or the other game. It never happened," he said.
"I was surprised that when Conte won the title and they lost one or two games at the beginning of the following season, people started to say he was going to be sacked.
"I said: 'Wow, but two or three months ago they won the Premier League.' The situation is completely different."
Sarri is contesting his first final as a manager. City, however, remain favourites after overwhelming the Blues the last time out.
Guardiola, though, feels the 6-0 win counts for nothing as Chelsea will step up a gear in a Cup final.
He said: "I don't like to play a team again in a short period of time, when you've beaten them by so much. They are incredible professional players and they will put in extra (for the final)."
Sarri also cannot understand why his position is under threat.
The Guardian reported that the Blues are even considering hiring their former coach and current England assistant manager Steve Holland to help steady the ship on an interim basis.
Guardiola had a history of success at Barcelona and Bayern Munich and was given time and funds to overhaul City, but Sarri is unlikely to receive the same leeway.
The Italian also pointed to the praise given to Arsenal boss Unai Emery in the Spaniard's first season in the Premier League.
"We are in the first final of the season. We are one point from the top four, the same points as Arsenal, and (people say) Arsenal are doing well," Sarri said. "We are doing a little bit better because we are in a final, and yet our season is a disaster. I don't understand.
"Last season, this team gained 70 points, not 100. Then, in the summer, we changed everything. So there is another problem to solve."
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is not renowned for his patience, and the two transfer-window bans imposed by Fifa on the Blues could not have come at a worse possible time for Sarri.
Even a win today may only delay the inevitable.

United just a cup team: Keane

United just a cup team: Keane

LONDON • Having experienced the heady highs of Sir Alex Ferguson's trophy-laden reign, it has pained former Manchester United stars Gary Neville and Roy Keane to see the club go from perennial title favourites to also-rans.
While the Red Devils have been in decline since the retirement of their greatest manager in 2013, at no time was the contrast between the haves and have-nots more stark than at Anfield on Sunday.
Ferguson, who was caught on camera looking on in disgust during United's 3-1 loss, had stepped away from football in the knowledge he had "knocked Liverpool off their perch".
But the Reds, under Jurgen Klopp, are threatening to return to the summit of English football and, on current form, the unbeaten league leaders have to be considered the front runners to land their first league title since 1990.
The defeat by a two-goal margin failed to tell the full story of Liverpool's dominance. They racked up a league record of 36 shots, the most United have faced even if only 11 were on target. And the Red Devils have now let in 29 goals, one more than the whole of last term.
On the other hand, the home side, with only seven goals conceded, can boast the best defensive record in the league - something that used to be a Jose Mourinho hallmark - and Neville referenced that on BBC Five Live, declaring Liverpool to be "streets ahead".
He said: "Not one of the United midfielders can pass a football. I find it staggering. United were awful. It's not good enough."

  • 1990
Manchester United's 26 points after 17 Premier League games is their worst points haul since 1990-91 (26 points).

    36
Shots United faced at Liverpool, their worst in the league since Opta started recording shot data in 2003-04.

The pundit also told Sky Sports he believed Mourinho was on borrowed time at Old Trafford, saying: "I think it (the sacking) will happen, my preference would always be to get to the end of the season.
"But the boardroom is so naive, it's unbelievable. The minute he came back from pre-season, he was at it and the club was out of control. Nobody above him can handle him. It will cost a fortune to lose him now. The club needs to reset."
Keane was equalling scathing, labelling the side he used to skipper as "an average Premier League side, nothing more".
Writing off their chances of silverware, he said: "They are Manchester United of the 1980s, a decent cup team."
Pundit Robbie Savage, who came through United's academy, felt the Portuguese manager could have "no excuses" as he had "over £100 million (S$173 million) on the bench".

He said: "They've spent plenty of money, they've brought players in. To be this far behind (19 points from the top) is ridiculous. It's not acceptable. They're not going to win the Champions League, they're not going to get into the top four. Where are they going?"
One player who was left kicking his heels as an unused substitute was £89 million club-record signing Paul Pogba.
He was not named in the United starting XI for a third straight league game while Fred, a £50 million summer recruit, was not even part of the squad. Pundits unanimously agreed that the France midfielder's time at the club, like Mourinho, was also coming to an end.
Savage added: "I don't think Pogba has a future at the club. The big question is, who will be at United longer, Mourinho or Pogba?"
With United now off to their worst league start since 1990-91, Mourinho cut a deflated figure at his post-match press conference, conceding that his side could not live with Klopp's men playing "200 miles per hour with the ball and without the ball".
And the 55-year-old tried to blame his sacked predecessors, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, saying that he had inherited a squad that is "permanently injured".
"Some of our players are always injured and it's not with me - it was before me. If you look to the stats with van Gaal and David, we had players who are permanently injured and physicality is difficult to get," he insisted.

Magic of cup feeds people's dreams: Zola

Magic of cup feeds people's dreams: Zola
LONDON • Twice an FA Cup winner with Chelsea, Gianfranco Zola knows the importance of the competition and what it means to win the oldest tournament in England.
The 52-year-old Italian, now an assistant coach to Blues manager Maurizio Sarri, has urged his team not to take the Cup lightly or to treat it as just one of four trophies they are seeking this season.
"For me, I always rated it as one of the best. It is open to everyone like football should be. It is an open competition and it feeds the dream of many people," he said at a pre-match conference ahead of today's third-round tie at home to Championship side Nottingham Forest.
"The crowd loves it, everybody does. We are trying to establish ourselves in this championship and we want to do well in the FA Cup. It is a pity the game comes when we have played so many games."
Zola also felt that striker Alvaro Morata, who has scored just one goal in his last eight games in all competitions, needed to be patient despite his drought.

"I have been a striker... When you look for goals and they don't come, it happens. Mainly it is confidence," he added.
"Alvaro has to understand to be important for the club. The way we play it helps the front players to score, you have to keep working.
"This is also the big issue we have for the amount of time we have the ball. We don't create enough chances. It is part of the process, we are not the perfect team."
Following the clash today, Chelsea will travel to Wembley to take on Tottenham in the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals on Tuesday and Zola hinted that Sarri will rotate his squad.
"You have to try to save some players," he said. "We have some players who cannot play, like Pedro, Willian and (Olivier) Giroud (due to injuries). It will leave space for others. We will rotate a little."
Off the pitch, a Chelsea supporter has been banned from attending games for three years after being found guilty of homophobic chants during the club's Premier League game against Brighton at the Amex Stadium last month.
George Bradley pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates' Court on Thursday to the offence of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress. The 20-year-old was also fined £965 (S$1,663).
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Unai Emery insisted that he will not take his opponents lightly when they travel to League One side Blackpool today.
The Spaniard will be in charge of his first FA Cup tie and he hopes to avoid a repeat of an outcome similar to when his Sevilla side lost to third-tier Racing Santander in the Copa del Rey in 2013.
He said: "I think we can win, we can lose, we can draw but we must be concerned. It is important also to prepare and respect every team."

Title cannot soothe PSG's pain in Europe
PARIS • Paris Saint-Germain may have clinched their long-expected sixth Ligue 1 title in the past seven seasons, but that triumph cannot mask the French club's shortcomings on the European stage where results have failed to match their huge investments.
Thomas Tuchel's side claimed the title without kicking a ball yesterday after second-placed Lille were held to a goal-less draw at Toulouse. PSG have 81 points after 32 games and cannot be caught as they lead Lille, who have played one more game, by 16 points with five games remaining. PSG hosted Monaco this morning (Singapore time).
Even the prospect of another domestic double - PSG play Stade Rennes in the French Cup final on Saturday - cannot soothe the pain felt by fans at seeing their galacticos team fall again at the last-16 hurdle in the Champions League.
Having spent over €1 billion (S$1.52 billion) on players since Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) took over the club in 2011, including the likes of Thiago Silva, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, PSG have not got past the quarter-finals of Europe's elite club competition since 1995.
In the past three seasons, they have gone out in the last 16 after squandering a four-goal lead against Barcelona in 2017 and a two-goal away advantage against Manchester United this year.
Tuchel, who replaced Unai Emery this season, also could not manage a domestic treble which the Spaniard and France World Cup-winner Laurent Blanc achieved.
PSG can argue that bad luck struck as Neymar suffered a foot injury before the Champions League knockout phase but, like last year, they have not addressed several weaknesses including the need to develop a winning mentality. Just ask Dani Alves.

  • Domestic league titles won by French Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in the last seven seasons.

"I know how to win," Brazil full-back Alves, who won three Champions League titles at Barcelona, said this week. "When someone has been there, maybe it's good to listen to them, rely on their experience."
Tuchel and the PSG management also failed to resolve Adrien Rabiot's situation, with the gifted midfielder being left out of the squad for most of the season over a contractual dispute.
With Blaise Matuidi having departed for Juventus in 2017, Tuchel has often had to play Marquinhos alongside Marco Verratti in midfield, although the Brazilian is probably his best central defender and PSG have suffered by conceding some soft goals.
Tuchel also failed to appoint a clear No. 1 goalkeeper, with France international Alphonse Areola and Italian great Gianluigi Buffon swopping roles throughout the season.
Buffon made a rookie mistake that led to Romelu Lukaku's goal when United won their last-16 second leg 3-1 in Paris, a damaging result that left PSG's expensive squad still chasing their elusive Champions League dream.

Une vie de pain : faire, penser et dire le pain en Europe

Chronic pain is pain that lasts a long time. In medicine, the distinction between acute and chronic pain is sometimes determined by an arbitrary interval of time since onset; the two most commonly used markers being 3 months and 6 months since onset, though some theorists and researchers have placed the transition from acute to chronic pain at 12 months.

Pain is the alarm of disease, the symptom that announces that all is not right with our bodies. Whether due to accident or illness, it is the most common reason that people seek medical assistance. But because pain has many causes, some of which are poorly understood, it is often a vexing problem to treat.

Football: Son's late winner gives Tottenham edge over Man City in Champions League quarter-final first leg

LONDON (REUTERS) - Son Heung-min once again proved there is more to Tottenham Hotspur than Harry Kane as the South Korean's late goal sealed a 1-0 home win over Manchester City in an absorbing Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday (April 9).
With Spurs talisman Kane having hobbled off injured and favourites City beginning to turn the screw, Son sent the home fans inside the London club's majestic new stadium into delirium as he fired past Ederson in the 78th minute.
It gave Tottenham a slender but precious advantage to take to City's Etihad Stadium next week when they will attempt to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time.
Quadruple-chasing City were not at their best as Spurs chased and harried Pep Guardiola's side for 90 minutes and they will rue Sergio Aguero's first-half penalty miss.
The Argentine was handed the chance to put City ahead when Danny Rose was adjudged by VAR to have handled, but his 13th minute spot kick was brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris.
The French keeper's heroics produced a deafening roar not heard along the Tottenham High Road since Spurs moved out of their old stadium two years ago, but it was nothing compared to the sounds that greeted Son's 78th minute winner.
"As a team we never give up, we fight until 90 minutes. I think we deserved to win, we were more clinical than them," said Son, who last week scored the first Premier League goal in the 62,000-seat arena, and now owns the first European strike there.
"I like this stadium, it is amazing to play here, I am grateful for the opportunity to play at this stadium."

Tottenham fans in the 17,500 capacity South Stand displayed placards before kickoff spelling out the club's motto "To Dare Is To Do" - and their team obliged, going toe-to-toe with a side who had won 21 of their last 23 games in all competitions.

SUPERB STOP

Dele Alli volleyed Moussa Sissoko's cross over early on but Tottenham were then stopped in their tracks.
Raheem Sterling cut in and fired goalwards and Rose, diving to block, was penalised for handball, courtesy of VAR, despite no City players even appealing for a penalty.
Lloris, who has come in for criticism this season, guessed right and made a superb stop.
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said on the eve of the game that his side would need to match the intensity of a City outfit oozing quality, both on the pitch and on a bench containing Kevin de Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane.
Tottenham worked their socks off to deny City time but after England forward Kane hobbled off just before the hour mark with a worrying-looking ankle injury, they appeared to be flagging.
City, for whom Sterling was a constant menace, were hunting an away goal but then Son, who has a knack of scoring goals for the team Guardiola once described as the "Harry Kane team" when their talisman has been sidelined, struck the decisive blow.
At first his control from Christian Eriksen's measured pass was sloppy, but Son retrieved the ball, then cut in from the byline and lashed a shot past Ederson, sparking delirium.

(REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said English Premier League title rivals Manchester City are currently the best team in the world but there is no guarantee Pep Guardiola's side will finish the season with an unprecedented quadruple.
With the League Cup already in the bag, City are a point clear of Liverpool at the top of the league, and have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
"City look like the best team in the world, that's how it is," Klopp told reporters.
"Barcelona struggled a little bit (against Villarreal on Tuesday) but still did the job. Juve look pretty impressive in Italy but you don't exactly know how it will be in the Champions League if Cristiano Ronaldo cannot do it.
"And you think, OK, City look a bit more stable than all of them. But that doesn't mean they will win all their games."
While the focus has been on City seeking a clean sweep of silverware, the prospect of Liverpool themselves completing a Premier League and Champions League double seems to have slipped under the radar.
Klopp, however, does not expect his players to take their foot off the gas until the end of the campaign.

"I'm just interested in our games and we cannot do more than win our games," the German added.
"We knew pretty quick Southampton was the next challenge, then Porto, then Chelsea, then Porto again. There is a lot to come and the only thing I can say is that we try everything to be really ready for that fight."
Liverpool visit Southampton in the league later on Friday (April 5) before City meet Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday.

Even as many believe Manchester City will maintain the lead on the table till their big win, Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool is ready to fight for the Premier League title, although he has described their title rivals, Man City, as 'the best team in the world'.

Valencia to home in on Arsenal's poor away form

Valencia to home in on Arsenal's poor away form
VALENCIA • Francis Coquelin has warned his former club Arsenal that Valencia are ready to exploit their fragility on the road and pull off another stirring fightback in the Europa League semi-final today.
The Spanish LaLiga side, who are owned by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, trail 3-1 ahead of the second leg at the Mestalla.
Coquelin, who spent a decade at Arsenal from 2008 to January last year, was suspended for the opener at the Emirates Stadium.
The midfielder believes Valencia are primed to punish Arsenal's soft underbelly - a woeful away record.
Under Unai Emery, appointed in the summer, they have eight losses and only a single clean sheet in the Premier League all season.
Declaring that "away from home, they are a different team", Coquelin said: "They drop the intensity a little bit. That means we can score goals and do damage, especially with the attack that we have."
Valencia have a superior head-to-head record with Arsenal at home, winning their past two meetings. And they have shown themselves capable of a comeback this season too, having trailed Getafe and Real Betis in the King's Cup before beating both clubs to reach the May 25 final against Barcelona.
Pinpointing their away goal as key, Coquelin added: "The team is ready to make a comeback. The goal we scored there helps us a lot.
"It will be a difficult game but, with the quality we have, we believe we can do it. The fans always help us a lot at home."
The 27-year-old left Arsenal after struggling to get first-team football under former manager Arsene Wenger and he has been revitalised this term, having been handed a more creative role by Marcelino.
The Frenchman said: "It would be a very special feeling to win against Arsenal, especially because I couldn't play in the first game."
Like Arsenal, Valencia's hopes of Champions League qualification will rest on winning the Europa League, as they sit three points adrift of fourth-placed Getafe in LaLiga, with two games left.
Chelsea, meanwhile, could extend their Europa League record to 17 unbeaten matches as they host Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, with the semi-final clash tied at 1-1 after the first leg.
