Football: Ranieri lined-up as Roma sack Di Francesco after Champions League flop

MILAN (AFP) - Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked as Roma coach after the team crashed out of the Champions League, the Italian club confirmed on Thursday (March 7), with former boss Claudio Ranieri tipped to replace him.
Roma had taken a 2-1 advantage to Porto for the second leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday but fell 4-3 on aggregate after a controversial penalty awarded following a VAR review deep into extra time.
"AS Roma can confirm head coach Eusebio Di Francesco has left the club with immediate effect," the team said in a statement.
"The club would like to thank Eusebio for his work during his time at AS Roma and wish him success in the future."
An urgent meeting had been called on Thursday afternoon in Rome between the club's top officials to discuss Di Francesco's future.
Club president Jim Pallotta later said: "On behalf of myself and everyone at AS Roma, I'd like to thank Eusebio for his work and his commitment.
"Since returning to the club, Eusebio has always acted professionally and put the club's needs ahead of his own. We all wish him well for the future."
Former Sassuolo boss Di Francesco took over in June 2017.

A former Roma midfielder, he had helped the team to their last Serie A title as a player in 2001.
The 49-year-old led Roma to the Champions League semi-finals last season for the first time since 1984, following an epic 3-0 comeback against Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
"Di Francesco will remain the coach who took Roma to the Champions League semi-finals after who knows how many years and he deserves credit for that," said captain Daniele De Rossi.
"I know this isn't our best season and the job of a coach will always be tied to results."
The club finished third last season but this campaign has been marked by struggles with Di Francesco apologising to fans but refusing to resign after a humiliating 7-1 defeat to Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals last month.
Roma are now fifth in Serie A, three points off the Champions League berths for next season, after falling 3-0 last weekend to bitter city rivals Lazio.

RANIERI 'READY'

Ranieri, who memorably guided Leicester City to the 2016 Premier League title before being sacked the following season, coached Roma from September 2009 to February 2011.
The 67-year-old Italian's brief spell as manager of Premier League strugglers Fulham ended last month after only four months in charge.
"Ranieri is ready," wrote Gazzetta Dello Sport, adding that the former Roma boss was expected to travel to the Italian capital from London by Friday at the latest.
Other reported contenders are former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and his Stamford Bridge successor Maurizio Sarri.
Ranieri has had a long coaching career in Italy with clubs including Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli. He coached French club Nantes before taking over at Fulham in November 2018, only to be sacked on February 28.
During his time in charge of Roma he oversaw 84 matches - winning 47, with 16 draws and 21 defeats.
Di Francesco has coached Roma for 87 games with 46 victories, 18 draws and 23 defeats.
The Champions League exit however was the final straw for American businessman Pallotta who had raged at VAR after the defeat.
The tie hinged on a decision by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir to point to the spot late in extra time upon reviewing an incident in which Alessandro Florenzi hauled back Porto forward Fernando.
Alex Telles converted the spot-kick, and Roma were then denied a penalty at the other end following a review, after Patrik Schick tumbled to the ground.
"Last year we asked for VAR in the Champions League because we got screwed in the semi-final and tonight, they've got VAR and we still get robbed," said Pallotta on Twitter.
"Patrik Schick was clearly clipped in the box, VAR shows it, and nothing is given. I'm tired of this c***. I give up."

Football: Dutch referee scores bizarre goal in lower-league game, video of strike goes viral

AMSTERDAM (REUTERS) - Some football teams gripe about playing against 12 men when a referee's decisions go against them but few have more cause for complaint than Dutch side Harkemase Boys, who were left fuming when a whistler scored against them on Saturday (May 26).
Footage of Maurice Paarhuis accidentally scoring for Hoek against Harkemase Boys has attracted almost five million views on Twitter (@HarkemaseBoys).
The referee told Dutch newspapers on Monday he had no option but to award the goal in the lower-league game.
"The ball hit my foot. I tried to get my leg out of the way but I couldn't do it on time," said Paarhuis, who had a tough time explaining why the goal should stand to the home side.
"The players of Harkemase Boys were asking: 'What's happening here?' But in these cases, the referee is a so-called 'dead element' and that means I had no option but to award a goal."
In the end, the goal mattered little as Harkemase Boys ran out 4-2 winners, and while the game's laws dictated that the goal had to stand a change is being brought in next season.
The ball will be deemed out of play "when it touches a match official, remains on the field of play and a team starts a promising attack, or the ball goes directly into the goal or the team in possession of the ball changes".
Play is to be restarted with a dropped ball.

Paarhuis says he sees the funny side of the incident and has been inundated with messages.
"My mobile is full of quips from people across the football world. You can believe some of them have approached me to become a striker for their team."
Paarhuis has been a referee since the age of 16 but also played at amateur level.
"It's not my first goal, I got a couple as a player," he added. "But I hope that it is both my first and last as a referee."

Football: MP & Silva's Singapore office in provisional liquidation following London HQ's insolvency

SINGAPORE - The media agency that gave the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) its biggest-ever partnership deal - a $25 million, six-year exclusive rights agreement - in 2015, is set to wind up, with doubts now hanging over the matter of recovering some $3 million in unpaid rights fees.
MP & Silva (MPS) has witnessed its London headquarters declared insolvent by Britain's High Court of Justice, and its Singapore office is now set to follow on the same path.
On Nov 19, PricewaterhouseCoopers' (PwC) Goh Thien Phong and Chan Kheng Tek were appointed as provisional liquidators of MPS after the company decided that existing liabilities meant that it was unable to continue doing business.
The Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority's (Acra) website lists MPS' status as "in liquidation - creditors' voluntary winding up".
MPS' accounts have been frozen, its staff contracts terminated, and all its physical assets auctioned off for some $22,000. A visit to its Singapore headquarters at Infinite Studios, just off Portsdown Avenue on Friday, confirmed the fact: The MPS name on the wall was all that remained in what was an empty office.
A meeting for MPS' creditors was held on Dec 12 at PwC's offices, with the company's full statement of accounts presented. The Straits Times understands that representatives of the FAS were present at the meeting, in a bid to recover monies from MPS.
A former MPS employee who was present revealed that creditors were informed that not a single shareholder of the company turned up at an extraordinary general meeting scheduled earlier that day.
"We had to act in the best interests of the company as well as its creditors. We couldn't continue doing business - and paying salaries - when the company was pretty much stuck in a state where it couldn't really do business," he said, on condition of anonymity.

"It was inevitable that one of our creditors would file for liquidation like it happened in the UK."
MPS was founded in 2004 by Italian businessmen Riccardo Silva and Andrea Radrizzani, the owner of English Championship side Leeds United. Under their leadership, it became the biggest player in the global sports media rights market, holding the broadcast rights to major competitions such as the top English, German and Italian leagues, and Formula One.
The pair sold a 65 per cent stake to Chinese companies Everbright Securities and Beijing Baofeng Technology for US$1 billion (S$1.38 billion) two years ago.
Problems started to surface soon after.
MPS reportedly failed to make payments to several other creditors, including the English Premier League, Italian Serie A, and German Bundesliga.
On Dec 1, The Times of London reported that PwC was seeking a High Court order to appoint it as provisional liquidator in order to prevent a "scramble" for €4.32 million (S$6.75 million) in the bank accounts of MPS' Irish subsidiary, which reportedly owes €55.3 million to creditors.
Across the Causeway, MPS' 15-year, RM1.2 billion (S$395 million) deal with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), also signed in 2015, was been terminated and the matter is now under arbitration.
Its Singapore office also faced issues.
Sources revealed that MPS' group president and chief executive Seamus O'Brien, who joined only in January, left the organisation in August.
He was followed out the door by Wu Swee Sin, MPS' Asia-Pacific managing director, along with several other management-level staff, leaving what sources reveal was a skeleton crew of junior staff numbering fewer than 10.
The remaining staff had their hands tied because of the company's legal issues and are understood to have conducted little to no business over the last five months.
ST understands that remaining employees had their contracts terminated in mid-November without any guarantees of being fully paid for the one-month notice required before the termination of contracts. Staff were asked by liquidators to submit proof of what the company still owes to them, and have already provided the required documentation.
Staff are usually the first creditors paid when a company undergoes liquidation, but that can only happen after liquidators - in this case PwC - receive a court order to liquidate.

Spurs blasted for lacking hunger, mental strength

Spurs blasted for lacking hunger, mental strength
LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino was damning in his assessment of his Tottenham players after they lost 2-1 at Southampton, accusing them of "complacency" and "arrogance" before suggesting that they do not have the mental strength required to win major honours.
Spurs looked on course for victory, having taken the lead through Harry Kane's 26th-minute goal and they were utterly dominant against their relegation-threatened opponents on Saturday.
But then came a quite incredible turnaround after the break as the Saints recorded their first home victory over Spurs since returning to the Premier League in 2012.
Yan Valery equalised before James Ward-Prowse scored the winner nine minutes from time as Spurs threw away their advantage.
Spurs were incredibly poor after the interval, especially in defence, and their manager, who was forced to watch from the directors' box, having been hit with a two-game ban for improper conduct, was not sparing in his criticism.
"It is so difficult to understand the way we played the second half," said Pochettino. "We showed a lack of hunger that you need to kill the game and, if you want to be a contender, to fight for things, you cannot play like this.
"We started to take some risks that were unnecessary and that was the main problem. It gave them belief and they started to build their game.
"When you lose the momentum after 45 minutes, that is about mentality, that is about being strong and keeping it right."
Spurs have three defeats and a draw from their past four league games, a curious run given their fine Champions League last-16 victory over Borussia Dortmund and one that puts their hopes of finishing third in jeopardy.
Admitting that it would be a "massive challenge" for Spurs to stay ahead of their top-four rivals, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all within striking distance, Pochettino added: "We are fighting against big sides.
"People talk about perceptions, but we need to realise if you do not fight with intensity for the Champions League, you will struggle.
"We had a big gap, welcome to the reality, we are under pressure to win games."

Football: Ozil leads five-star Arsenal past Bournemouth

LONDON (AFP) - Mesut Ozil made the most of being handed a rare start by Arsenal boss Unai Emery as the German masterminded a 5-1 victory over Bournemouth on Wednesday (Feb 27) to keep the Gunners in pole position for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Ozil opened the scoring after just four minutes before turning provider for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to double Arsenal's lead.
Lys Mousset briefly gave Bournemouth hope before half-time, but Ozil and Mkhitaryan combined once more to tee up Laurent Koscielny to make it 3-1 before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette rounded off an eighth straight Premier League win at the Emirates for Emery's men.
The Spanish coach has been reluctant to use Arsenal's highest earner in his debut season in charge as Ozil was making just his second league start of the year.
However, the former Real Madrid midfielder showed why Arsenal handed him a contract worth a reported £350,000 a week last January by rolling back the years as the link-up between him and Mkhitaryan questioned why they had not started together in the Premier League since November.
Emery now has a welcome selection headache for Saturday's crucial north London derby away to Tottenham on whether to stick with Ozil and Mkhitaryan, while Aubameyang and Lacazette are also in top form and vying for a place up front.
Arsenal were helped along the way by some feeble Bournemouth defending as the Cherries succumbed to a 10 consecutive away defeat.
Artur Boruc should have got a stronger hand to Ozil's shot that bounced over the Polish goalkeeper to give the hosts a perfect start.
At the other end, Arsenal's own defensive deficiencies were also on show at times as only a fine save from Bernd Leno denied Ryan Fraser an equaliser before Dan Gosling's follow-up effort was bravely blocked by Matteo Guendouzi.
Bournemouth caused their own problems again in the build-up to Arsenal's second as Adam Smith gifted possession to Mkhitaryan, but it was still brilliantly pounced upon as the Armenian exchanged passes with Ozil before slotting into an empty net.
A hint of complacency cost Arsenal moments later when Guendouzi was caught in possession on the edge of his own box by Gosling and he squared for Mousset to roll into an empty net.
However, Arsenal clicked through the gears after the break and put the game to bed before the hour mark.
The Ozil-Mkhitaryan connection again opened up Bournemouth down Arsenal's right and Mkhitaryan picked out Koscielny, whose shot deflected in off Nathan Ake.
Mkhitaryan was the creator again for the fourth when his through ball freed Aubameyang in behind the Bournemouth defence and the Gabon striker stayed cool to round Boruc and slot home his 19th goal of the season.
A start for Aubameyang meant Lacazette had to settle for a place on the bench, but the French international still had time to add his 14th of the campaign with a brilliant free-kick 12 minutes from time.

Football: Iran, Iraq power into Asian Cup knockout phase

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Iran sank Vietnam and Iraq beat Yemen as the neighbours and arch-rivals powered into the Asian Cup round of 16 on Saturday (Jan 12) ahead of their highly anticipated group decider next week.
Sardar Azmoun struck both goals in Iran's 2-0 win in Abu Dhabi, while teenager Mohanad Ali's early solo strike kick-started Iraq's 3-0 victory in Sharjah.
Iran and Iraq will meet in Dubai on Wednesday to decide who tops Group D in a repeat of their combustible quarter-final of 2015, which Iraq won on penalties.
Iran, looking to end a 43-year title drought since last winning Asian football's most coveted prize, could have scored four or five but for some poor finishing in Abu Dhabi.
"It's a pity our performance didn't produce a couple more goals," Iran coach Carlos Queiroz told reporters.
"But winning is the best medicine in football. To win two games and score seven goals - I have to praise my players because I am very demanding."
Saman Ghoddos and Mehdi Taremi went close for Asia's top-ranked team before Azmoun rose to head home a Ghoddos cross after 38 minutes.
The Rubin Kazan forward lashed in his third goal of the tournament from the edge of the box 20 minutes from time to give Iran a record ninth successive first-round victory dating back to 2007.
Co-favourites with South Korea to lift the Asian Cup, Iran crushed war-torn Yemen 5-0 in their opening Group D game.

'A FINISHER'

They were indebted to goalkeeper Alireza Safar Beiranvand for a courageous save from Nguyen Cong Phuong, but were otherwise barely ruffled by the South-east Asian champions.
"We just need to relax more," said Queiroz. "In the second half our anxiety to score a third goal led to some bad passes."
Queiroz singled out Azmoun, who came out of international retirement for the Asian Cup.
"He's a finisher," said the Portuguese, now in his eighth year as Iran coach.
"We have high hopes for him for this competition. But the way the team is contributing around him, and our movement in the last third, are very interesting."
In Sharjah, 18-year-old Ali scored a wonderful solo goal to put Iraq 1-0 up after 11 minutes, although questions must be raised of the Yemeni defence.
Pouncing on a loose back pass, Ali held off three defenders before rifling his shot past Jalal Hassan in the Yemen goal.
Bashar Resan doubled Iraq's lead midway through the first half when his deflected shot drifted in off the upright with Hassan slow to get across.
Ali hit the post in one of the rare highlights of the second half before Alaa Abbas struck in injury time, finishing sharply after Ahmed Yaseen's header into his path.

Football: Man City hit nine past Burton to cruise towards League Cup final

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Holders Manchester City can look forward to defending the League Cup in next month's final at Wembley as Gabriel Jesus struck four goals in a 9-0 thrashing of Burton Albion in their semi-final, first leg on Wednesday (Jan 9).
Kevin de Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez were also on target against Nigel Clough's League One side as City ensured their visit to the Pirelli Stadium on January 23 is a mere formality.
After also thrashing Rotherham 7-0 in the FA Cup on Sunday with a much-changed side, Pep Guardiola was able to again hand a rest to a number of his key players but named a strong side with De Bruyne continuing his comeback from injury.
And the Belgian set the tone for the evening by heading City into a fifth-minute lead as he timed his run into the box perfectly to head home David Silva's cross.
Clough admitted before the game it would take a "miracle" for Burton to blunt the Premier League champions' might over two legs.
So it proved, but the visitors missed a glorious chance to get straight back on level terms when Marcus Harness blasted over Lucas Akins's cross when completely unmarked inside the penalty box.
It took City until the half hour mark to double their advantage, but a glut of three goals in seven minutes followed to put the tie to bed before the break.
Jesus headed home his first from close range after Bradley Collins had denied Leroy Sane before the Brazilian slotted home Silva's cushioned pass via the inside of the post.
City didn't need any luck, but still got some when Zinchenko's intended cross then looped over Collins to make it 4-0.
Other sides may have slacked off in the second period, but with competitions for places so fierce among Guardiola's side, the hosts were ruthless to match the Catalan's biggest ever win as a coach.
Jesus powered home a header to complete his second hat-trick of the season.
De Bruyne was then replaced by home favourite Foden, who was surprisingly left out the stating XI, just before the hour mark.
It took just four minutes for the 18-year-old to score his third City goal as he profited from the rebound after Collins did well to parry Jesus's first effort.
Jesus did soon have his fourth with a delicate finish from Sane's cross and City's dominance was summed up when right-back Kyle Walker strode forward to fire home his side's eighth of the evening.
Mahrez made it nine seven minutes from time and those City fans still in the Etihad cried for a historic 10th.
But that was the only thing City fell short of on the night with a final meeting against Tottenham or Chelsea on February 24 guaranteed.
