Valencia's aim: stop Messi at all costs

Valencia's aim: stop Messi at all costs

MADRID • Valencia coach Marcelino knows that if his team were to have any chance of beating Barcelona, they must first stop Lionel Messi.
Ahead of today's King Cup's final in Seville, the Spaniard did not reveal his exact game plan but warned his players that they will have to nullify the threat of the Argentinian superstar forward at all costs.
"The key is giving Messi little to do in the game," Marcelino said, as reported by Spanish daily Marca.
"The problem is that although he appears sparingly, his actions have a decisive influence."
Striker Kevin Gameiro, who scored 11 goals in all competitions this season (Messi has 50), added: "With Messi, Barcelona are never easy to beat. But we can't afford to play with fear of what's in front of us. Do that and you lose."
Valencia, owned by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, last won the King's Cup 11 years ago when Fernando Morientes scored in a 3-1 victory over Getafe in a stadium that no longer exists. That was the last trophy the club hoisted in any competition.
After 15 games this season, they sat 15th in the Spanish LaLiga, a battle against relegation more likely than a late push for the top four.

  • 2008

The last time Valencia won the King's Cup.

"I can't explain it," said Marcelino, who was the club's 12th coach in five years. But, this time, the club persevered and his team's form returned.
They made the Europa League semi-finals, where they were beaten by Arsenal, and then saw off Valladolid last Saturday to reach next season's Champions League.
The result may not be remarkable - they made it last year, too - but it was the way they did it. Unlike Barcelona, the adversity enhanced the achievement.
"It has been an outstanding season," added Marcelino. "We have had a lot of problems, but we stayed calm. To get back into the Champions League again is a great achievement."
For LaLiga champions Barcelona, a fifth consecutive King's Cup will amount to just damage limitation if they beat Valencia.
Victory for Barca would only slightly alleviate the disappointment of failing in the Champions League. But, should they lose, less than three weeks after the collapse at Liverpool, it would plunge the club back into crisis.
The numbers, however, favour Barcelona. Twenty-six points separate the two sides in the LaLiga table, with Barca scoring more goals than Valencia have scored and let in put together.
Valencia captain Dani Parejo finished as their top scorer with nine league goals, the same number Messi had hit before the middle of November. And Valencia have beaten Barcelona only once in 14 attempts, without a victory in any of their last eight meetings.
But, while Barca look like a side still hurting and eager to end the season, Valencia are flying high after the late surge that saw them snatch fourth place last Saturday.
"We weren't playing for anything and it showed," said Barca coach Ernesto Valverde after the 2-2 draw away at Eibar on Sunday.
"In Seville, we will be completely different."

Emery urges consistency during season's final straight

LONDON • Unai Emery challenged a revitalised Arsenal to write their own history after they climbed to third place - two points ahead of Manchester United and Tottenham - in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Newcastle.
Aaron Ramsey's first-half opener was followed by Alexandre Lacazette's strike in the game's closing stages at the Emirates on Monday to maintain their impressive progress under the Spaniard.
This is the highest position Arsenal have reached in the league since April 2017, highlighting their improvement since Emery replaced Arsene Wenger after last season.
They had 63 points in the Frenchman's final year, but Emery has matched that tally with seven games to spare to put the club in the box seat for a top-four spot.
It was also their 10th straight home league win, the first time they have done so since the 1997-98 double-winning season.
But, while Arsenal fans celebrated at the full-time whistle by taunting their spluttering north London rivals with chants of "Are you watching Tottenham", Emery urged caution ahead of "a very difficult away game" against Everton on Sunday.
He told Sky Sports: "We are making progress in the table, but we know it is difficult. Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea are going to win a lot of games in the last moment in the season and we also need to do that.
"We need to continue being consistent, continue being together and continue with a big mentality to learn when we need to struggle together to impose our moment in 90 minutes. It's a big challenge for us to continue in this way.
"Our target is very clear. We have created a big atmosphere here. We are in a good moment, a good mentality with the players."
The Spaniard also praised Ramsey, who will be leaving on a free transfer to join Juventus in the summer, for "playing with a very big performance".
He added: "Aaron is happy, he is helping us and we need that, with him scoring. Each energy from the players is very important for us and he is doing that. He is giving us his quality, energy, behaviour to push.
"We know and he knows we are in the most important moment of the season."

Football: Liverpool recover from shaky start to beat Palace 4-3

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Premier League leaders Liverpool recovered from a poor first-half display as they came from behind to beat an impressive Crystal Palace 4-3 in an enthralling clash at Anfield on Saturday (Jan 19).
The win, secured by late goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, moves Juergen Klopp's side a provisional seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who face bottom club Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
Palace won at City last month and at times looked as though they could produce another upset but while this was far from vintage Liverpool their prolific strikers helped them avoid a slip-up.
Trailing 1-0 at the break, two Liverpool goals inside the opening eight minutes of the second half changed the momentum of the match.
"The result is massive, we have 60 points now, it's crazy, it's an important number," said Klopp.
"I'm really proud, a few things happened that we don't really need, we're a bit short now on players but we have a few days and need to use the time now for recovery."
Palace, the last team to win at Anfield in the league back in April, 2017, took a shock 34th minute lead, against the run of play, when Andros Townsend slotted home a fine pull-back from Wilfried Zaha.
Liverpool equalised 47 seconds after the interval when the ball looped high into the area where Salah skilfully converted with the outside of his left foot after Virgil van Dijk's long-range effort was blocked.

LIVERPOOL BUZZING

Suddenly Liverpool were buzzing and it was no surprise when Brazilian Roberto Firmino put them ahead, collecting a pass from Naby Keita and beating veteran Palace keeper Julian Speroni with a slightly deflected low shot.
But the visitors were not about to roll over and they fought back to level at 2-2 in the 65th when James Tomkins was left unattended to head in a Luka Milivojevic corner.

Speroni, Palace's 39-year-old third-choice, then gifted Liverpool a goal when his one-handed waft at a harmless-looking James Milner cross fell for Salah to tap in after 75 minutes.
Salah now has 50 goals in his 72 Premier League appearances and is the current top scorer in the league with 16.
Milner was sent off in the 89th for a second yellow card after a late challenge on Zaha before Mane added the fourth for the hosts with a solo strike in stoppage time.
There was still time for Palace to strike again with Max Meyer beating Alisson Becker with a low shot which the Brazilian keeper would have expected to save.
Liverpool's back line then handled some late pressure from Palace to seal the three points.

MASSIVE RELIEF

"It's a massive relief," said Klopp.
"We knew for different reasons the game would be difficult. Crystal Palace traditionally do well against Liverpool and with the physicality it was clear it would be like the first half was.
"We had to stay positive, being one down is not a massive blow, we just needed to win the second half and did what we had to do," he added.
Hodgson, whose side are hovering just above the relegation zone despite excellent performances against some of the top clubs, said he felt a mixture of pride and disappointment.
"I'm very proud of the team. You know they have extremely good players, you know it will be a hard task and it will require a lot of discipline and we did well to come back to 2-2 and 4-3 at the end after conceding a very unfair goal.
"You need character and personality and good team spirit, people prepared to stick to the game plan even when it's not going your way.
"We knew if we deviated from the plan we could find it very difficult but we stuck to our way of playing and really I should be stood here congratulating the lads on getting something out if it," added the former Liverpool and England manager."

Football: Jurgen Klopp mentality behind Liverpool's historic comeback, says Jose Mourinho

(REUTERS) - Liverpool's stunning victory over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday (May 7) was made possible by the belief manager Jurgen Klopp has instilled in his squad, according to Jose Mourinho.
Liverpool produced one of the greatest comebacks in the competition's history to beat Barcelona 4-0, overturning a three-goal first-leg deficit to advance to their second consecutive final with a 4-3 aggregate victory.
"For me, this has one name - Jurgen," Mourinho, who led Porto and Inter Milan to the Champions League title, told beIN Sports.
"This is about him. This is a reflection of his personality - don't give up - his fighting spirit, every player giving everything.
"He's not crying because he's missing (injured) players, he's not crying because they're playing 50 or 60 matches a season... Today is about Jurgen's mentality.
"This is not about tactics, not about philosophy. This is about heart and soul and fantastic empathy he has created with that group of players."
Liverpool risked finishing the season without a trophy with Manchester City leading the Premier League title race with one game to go and Barcelona heavy favourites to advance to the final after a commanding win at the Nou Camp.

But the thrilling victory over the Spanish champions gave the Merseyside club a chance of winning a sixth European Cup when they face either Tottenham Hotspur or Ajax Amsterdam in the final on June 1.
"I didn't expect (this result)," Mourinho, who also coached Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United, added. "I said if it's possible, Anfield is one of the places to make it possible.
"They were at risk of finishing a fantastic season with nothing to celebrate and now they are one step away from being European champions."

Minnows Yangon can pack a punch

Tampines Rovers could seal passage to the Asean zone semi-finals of the AFC Cup with a win over Yangon United at the Jalan Besar Stadium today, but Stags head coach Kadir Yahaya has warned his charges to be wary of the Myanmar side.
With two matches left, Tampines lead Group F with 10 points, three ahead of Vietnam's Hanoi FC.
Cambodian side Nagaworld and Yangon have three points apiece but the former are third because of a better head-to-head record.
Yangon are all but out of the running for a place in the knock-out stages - they are unlikely to finish as the best second-placed team among the three Asean groups - which makes them a threat, according to Kadir.
At the pre-game media conference at the Copthorne King's Hotel yesterday, the former Singapore international said: "They have nothing to lose, and so the danger we are facing is that they are playing with no objective.
"They can attack at will, and for us it is important to remain calm, keep our shape and composure."
The caution is understandable after Tampines struggled before beating Nagaworld 4-2 through three goals in the dying minutes in their last game on April 17.

UNBRIDLED ATTACK
They have nothing to lose, and so the danger we are facing is that they are playing with no objective. They can attack at will, and for us it is important to remain calm, keep our shape and composure.
KADIR YAHAYA, Tampines head coach, on Yangon's attack.

Kadir said of that match: "We expected their (Nagaworld's) fast counter attacks, and there were some lapses in concentration on our part which resulted in them equalising (to make it 1-1)."
"Credit to the players, they kept fighting and eventually we got the goals and result we wanted."
His experienced stars like Khairul Amri and Daniel Bennett will be key to getting a win against Yangon to lift the team after their poor run of just three draws in their last four Singapore Premier League (SPL) matches.
Kadir believes that squad rotation - essential when competing in the AFC Cup - affects the team's consistency, and pointed to how Home United also suffered domestically during their run to the Asean zone crown last year, and how the Protectors posted stronger results in the SPL after the group stage of the AFC Cup.
Home won just twice in their first seven SPL games last term, but notched 10 wins in their next 17 matches to finish second.
Yangon coach Myo Min Tun is expecting a tough night for his charges, especially without first-choice goalkeeper Kyaw Zin Htet (illness) and Guinean striker Sekou Sylla (suspension).
"Tampines have many good and skilful individual players, like the two wingers (Ryutaro Megumi and Jordan Webb)," noted the 35-year-old, who scored for Myanmar against Singapore in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup.
"Tomorrow will be very difficult for us, but we will do our best to challenge and show our level and our team's playing style."
