PFA award 'special' but van Dijk focused on Barcelona

PFA award 'special' but van Dijk focused on Barcelona
LONDON • An unstoppable force will meet an unmovable object as Lionel Messi comes up against Virgil van Dijk tomorrow, with Liverpool travelling to Barcelona for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.
But, while the Netherlands skipper is relishing putting the shackles on the Argentina talisman, the Ballon d'Or award is not a match-up he intends to win.
Speaking after being crowned the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year by his peers on Sunday, van Dijk said: "(World Player of the Year) is not something that's on my mind at all.
"There are currently players walking around in this football world that are out of this world (Messi is a five-time Ballon d'Or winner) and they've been doing it for many years.
"I'm very happy how I perform at the moment, how consistent I'm performing, that I'm fit as well. I just need to not look too far ahead."
He is the fourth Dutchman to win English football's most prestigious individual prize and the first defender since Chelsea captain John Terry in 2005.
Van Dijk's compatriot Vivianne Miedema was named Women's Player of the Year after scoring 22 times to lead Arsenal Women to their first title since 2012.

  • No opposition player has dribbled past the Dutch defender in any of his 36 league appearances this season.

Besides facing Barcelona, Liverpool are aiming to overtake Manchester City's one-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
Van Dijk, 27, said: "Right now, we're in a tight title race, (also) in the Champions League semi-finals against a fantastic team, where probably the best players are playing, so we just take it game by game.
"For us, now it's time to focus on Barcelona midweek and then we have a big game at Newcastle away (on Saturday) as well."
However, he admitted the accolade was "special" and said: "I'm very proud and honoured to receive it. If you see the standard of strikers or playmakers we have in the league, it's unbelievable."
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp was equally thrilled for van Dijk, who joined in January last year, jokingly referencing his £75 million (S$132 million) transfer fee as "a very, very small price". He said: "I'm really proud it's the second time in a row (Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was last year's winner).
"From the first moment (of signing), I was so excited about the opportunity to work together and now you are the man - at least for this season!"
Pundits also hailed van Dijk as a worthy winner, with former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer calling him "immense", while ex-Reds midfielder Danny Murphy talked up his "tremendous blend of athleticism and powers of recovery".
Manchester City's Raheem Sterling, 24, won the PFA Young Player of the Year award and yesterday was named Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association.

Giroud eyes Platini's record after scoring again for Les Bleus

Giroud eyes Platini's record after scoring again for Les Bleus

PARIS • As a striker, Olivier Giroud has always been a polarising figure with his profligacy in front of goal.
However, his unselfish play and hold-up ability have always been treasured at both club and international levels.
While his value has fallen at Chelsea, having started only six Premier League games this season, he remains one of the first names on Didier Deschamps' team sheet.
On Monday, he showed why the France coach continues to keep faith in him as he "brings something different to the other two strikers".
Giroud put his club frustrations behind him after his second goal in his second competitive game saw him reach an international milestone, cementing his place among his country's greats.
France hammered Iceland 4-0 at the Stade de France, with forwards Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann and defender Samuel Umtiti also among the scorers. The world champions stayed top of Group H in the Euro 2020 qualifiers, ahead of Turkey on goal difference.
But it was Giroud who earned all the plaudits after notching his 35th goal from 89 international caps to move to third place on the list of France's all-time top scorers, one goal ahead of David Trezeguet.
Only Thierry Henry (51) and Michel Platini (41) have scored more than the 32-year-old, something Deschamps feels "must be a source of great pride for him".
He said: "He arrived with us having not played a lot with his club, even if he has been super efficient in the Europa League (he has nine goals in as many games this term).
"With us, he scored twice in two games. He remains effective and he is playing according to his style."
His opposite number Erik Hamren agreed, claiming Giroud "was a really important player for them the way they play".
The Iceland coach said: "You could see that today, how they use him, he's a really good player for France the way they use him."
And Giroud, whose Blues' contract expires in the summer, has no plans to relinquish his position as France's target man, even as rumours swirl around his possible return to Ligue 1 with Lyon.
Telling website Tribal Football he had an eye on overtaking Platini's mark, he said: "Yes it's (an) objective. I always said that the important thing for me was the collective. But it is true that, personally, I hope to beat this record."
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, REUTERS

He is part of a breed of striker who are seriously underrated in the modern game, Giroud, Mandzukic, Dzeko are all underrated. Only Lewandowski is that type of striker who gets the recognition he deserves, but Giroud is a class act with a great goal/game ratio, he takes a lot stick that is undeserved.

Football: Japan's Maya Yoshida warns young teammates - pressure comes with the territory

TOKYO (REUTERS) - Japan captain Maya Yoshida warned his young teammates that they will need to handle the pressure that comes with being Asian Cup favourites as the four-time winners prepare to open their campaign against Turkmenistan on Wednesday (Jan 9).
The Samurai Blue are the most successful side in the tournament's history with four titles and are among the favourites in the United Arab Emirates, alongside South Korea and Iran.
Southampton defender Yoshida, who was a member of the squad that won Japan's last Asian Cup title in 2011, said that the pressure to succeed comes with the territory.
"There's always a strong expectation that we'll win in Asia. There's a lot of pressure, but it's something you have to deal with in order to win," Yoshida said on Tuesday as he looked ahead to the Turkmenistan clash.
"If you can't handle that pressure, you won't make it into the World Cup (squad), or to World Cup qualifying."
Coach Hajime Moriyasu, who is undefeated in his first five games in charge, has named a young and inexperienced squad including 12 players with 10 or fewer caps for the tournament where they are in Group F alongside Turkmenistan, Oman and Uzbekistan.
Yoshida wants his young teammates to take advantage of the opportunity in the UAE to cement themselves in the Japan side.
"You can't take on the world by yourself," he added.
"To take the next step as a Japan player, you have to overcome that."

Football: Keita and Firmino give Liverpool 2-0 Champions League win over Porto

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Goals from Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino earned Liverpool a 2-0 win over Porto on Tuesday (April 9) as Juergen Klopp's side took the upper hand in their Champions League quarter-final tie without killing off their Portuguese opponents.
There remains plenty of work to do for the Premier League leaders, who will be disappointed they were unable to gain a bigger advantage for next week's second leg.
On a bitterly cold night at Anfield, Liverpool were well below their best and Porto deserve credit for a determined performance after going two goals down in 26 minutes.
The visitors fired an early warning shot with Moussa Marega blasting narrowly wide in the second minute but the home side took the lead three minutes later through a Keita shot which deflected off Porto midfielder Oliver Torres and beat the helpless Iker Casillas.
Mohamed Salah then forced Casillas into a low save with a sharp shot on the turn, but the Egyptian should have done better in the 22nd minute when he placed the ball wide when through on goal, after being played in by a sloppy Porto pass.
Liverpool had their second four minutes later - Jordan Henderson split the Porto defence with a superb pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose low cross was tapped in from close range by Firmino. The Brazilian should have added to his tally, but blasted over after a good cross from Henderson.
The dangerous Marega then had a low drive well saved by the legs of Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker as Porto showed they were not about to roll over.
Sadio Mane had an effort ruled out for offside three minutes after the interval, but apart from another Marega effort in the 69th minute there were few clear-cut chances in the second half.
The Portuguese side fought well to stay in the game in a scrappy second half to give themselves a chance of a comeback at home in next week's second leg.

Belgium coach hails Courtois for calm reaction to error

BRUSSELS • Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has defended Thibaut Courtois following his error on Thursday, which led to an equaliser during the 3-1 win over Russia in their Euro 2020 Group I qualifier at Brussels' King Baudouin Stadium.
Captain Eden Hazard scored twice for Belgium to spare the blushes of his goalkeeper, who gifted Russia's Denis Cheryshev a soft goal when he failed to clear the ball in time.
"After that incident, you could see why Thibaut is the No. 1 in the world," Martinez said in a press conference after the match.
"He played as if nothing had happened and remained icy calm.
"Impressive, the way he reacted after his mistake. Credit to Russia for that counter goal. At times they put a lot of pressure, so we made the wrong decision at the time."
Youri Tielemans opened the scoring with his first international goal before Hazard netted his brace to clinch the three points for Belgium.
Martinez's men led as early as the 15th minute when Timothy Castagne's pass fed Tielemans on the edge of the box and, as Russia's defensive line opened up, the Leicester midfielder fired a low shot past goalkeeper Guilherme Marinato.
But their lead lasted barely a minute before Courtois made his error.
The Real Madrid custodian dallied in possession following a back-pass and, when pressed into action, he gave the ball straight to Cheryshev on the edge of the box and the winger, who scored four goals at last year's World Cup, finished into an empty net.
He was, however, unfazed and insisted after the match that such instances do not happen often for him.
"I don't think I've made many mistakes in my career, so if you make one, you're obviously not happy," said the 26-year-old .
"I am satisfied with the victory and also with the game I played after my foul. I remained calm, I am happy with that. There is no problem."
Striker Michy Batshuayi was asked by Martinez to lead the line in the absence of the injured Romelu Lukaku, while the Hazard brothers, Eden and Thorgan, played together for only the third time in a national team shirt.
"I enjoyed myself tonight. I take a lot of pleasure from this victory, in which I scored two goals," said skipper Hazard.
"After our last game against Switzerland (a 5-2 Nations League defeat), we had to respond in front of our own fans."

Football: Man United great Scholes appointed manager of Oldham

LONDON (AFP) - Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes has been appointed manager of Oldham Athletic, the club announced on Monday (Feb 11).
Scholes, 44, is taking on his first managerial role, signing a contract with the club he supported as a boy after spending his entire playing career at Old Trafford.
The former Premier League club are languishing in mid-table in League Two, the fourth tier of the English game.
"Oldham Athletic are delighted to announce footballing legend Paul Scholes as the new first-team manager on a one-and-a-half-year-deal," the club said in a statement.
"I couldn't be any happier at the minute," Scholes told Oldham's official website. "It's been a while. Obviously there's been talk of it when I finished my (playing) career.
"It wasn't something I was quite ready to do and there's obviously been three or four times over the last six years where it could have happened and I've not been quite ready."
Scholes, a member of Manchester United's famed "Class of '92" alongside David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, said he wanted to entertain Oldham's fans.
"I want my team to be aggressive and focused on winning first and foremost," he said. "I know it's not going to happen every week, but I go into every game expecting to win."
Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam said: "Paul has won everything there is to win in football.
"He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see."
Manchester United wished Scholes luck, saying in a message on Twitter: "Best of luck to Scholesy in his new role as first-team manager of @OfficialOAFC!" United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, preparing his team to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday, wished his former team-mate luck.
"Watch the pundits because he's been asking for it," joked the Norwegian, referring to Scholes's outspoken comments as a TV critic.
"It's fantastic to have Scholesy back in the game because he was a fantastic player to play with, great personality. It's a challenge for him.
"I know it wasn't what he thought he was going to do when he was a player. But that drug of football when you don't get it, Paul is one of them, he loves football."
Scholes, who owns a stake in non-league Salford, will step down from his role as director of the National League club, who could be in competition with Oldham next season if they win promotion from the fifth tier.
The English Football League gave Scholes the go-ahead to join Oldham last week, ruling that there was no conflict of interest.
He will take charge of his first match against Yeovil at Oldham's Boundary Park ground on Tuesday.

Anfield is 'worst stadium' to visit for Bayern star Robben

Anfield is 'worst stadium' to visit for Bayern star Robben

MUNICH • When their Champions League last-16 fixture was announced in December, Arjen Robben called it "the worst possible draw" for Bayern Munich.
He was at Liverpool's Anfield when, in the 2004-05 and 2006-07 seasons, Chelsea fell maddeningly short in the semi-finals.
The first was decided by Luis Garcia's "ghost goal", and Robben prefers to leave it at "we'll never know" when asked if it went in.
The second was settled on penalties, one of which he sent too close to Pepe Reina, and proved to be his penultimate match for the club.
He remembers that as an "emotional game" and, both times, Chelsea were repelled by a formidable defensive blockade.
"At that time, they were really capable of being this cup-fighter team, also in the FA Cup," he said.
"In one or two games, they could really live up to it and perform. Just not the whole season, which was maybe too much. That was their biggest quality, they were there at the moment they needed to be there.

NO FOND MEMORIES
If you ask me what's the worst stadium for me, it's probably Liverpool. You always have your favourite opponent and there always has to be a negative one.
ARJEN ROBBEN, Bayern Munich winger, who has lost at Anfield with Chelsea and Real Madrid.

"Now it's changed and they (have) developed really well. The manager (Jurgen Klopp) has done a great job.
"Last year, they were in the Champions League final and, at the moment, they are top (of the Premier League). It's a long, long time ago that they won the league and that's the one they're dreaming of."
Recalling how he also suffered heartbreak as part of a Real Madrid side that were thrashed 4-0 by the Reds in 2009, he sounded a warning about Anfield to his teammates.
"If you ask me what's the worst stadium for me, it's probably Liverpool," the former Netherlands forward admitted. "You always have your favourite opponent and there always has to be a negative one."
The 35-year-old also believes the "atmosphere is probably one of the best you can imagine in Europe".
Naming Liverpool as among the favourites to win this term's Champions League, he added: "It's (the crowd) always like a big boost to them. But we're used to playing in big stadiums, so we just have to focus on ourselves.
"We know their qualities. In these top games there are not a lot of secrets. It's about the little details."
While Robben will play no part in tomorrow's first leg, having been out since November with a thigh injury, he feels Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk's one-game suspension will be a weak point the German champions have to exploit.
He said of his former national colleague: "He is a key player at a gigantic club, and he is the captain of the Netherlands team. He deserves all the compliments."
