Football: Blow for Real Madrid as Courtois suffers hip injury

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has sustained a hip injury and could miss crunch La Liga games against Real Betis and Sevilla later this month.
Madrid confirmed on Wednesday (Jan 9) that Courtois has been diagnosed with a grade one injury, the least severe possible, and he was left out of the squad to face Leganes in the Copa del Rey.
"Following tests carried out on our player Thibaut Courtois today by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a grade 1 injury in the left iliac muscle. His recovery will be monitored," a club statement read.
Real sit in a surprising fifth place in the La Liga table, ten points behind leaders Barcelona and as well as the first leg against Leganes on Wednesday, Courtois is likely to miss Sunday's league match away to Real Betis.
Madrid then play the return fixture against Leganes on January 16 before hosting third-placed Sevilla in the Spanish top flight three days later.
Courtois is likely to be replaced by Keylor Navas, who was named Uefa's best goalkeeper of last season after he helped Madrid win a third Champions League title in a row.
The club still signed Courtois from Chelsea last summer, however, and the Belgian has been first choice since Santiago Solari was appointed coach in November.

Football: Chelsea chairman blames 'unpleasant' minority for shaming club

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has blamed a "deeply unpleasant but vocal minority" for shaming the club's fans in an open letter following recent incidents of abuse.
The Premier League club and police opened investigations after alleged racist abuse was directed at Manchester City's Raheem Sterling by a section of home supporters at Stamford Bridge earlier this month.
Chelsea suspended four supporters pending an investigation.
And minutes into last week's Europa League clash with Vidi in Budapest, a vocal minority of Chelsea fans were heard singing a derogatory chant about Tottenham supporters, featuring anti-Semitic language.
European governing body UEFA on Tuesday (Dec 18) announced it had launched an investigation into the chants, with the results due to be published next month.
"After recent events, I wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to our community and fans to condemn the actions of a few mindless individuals at some of our recent matches," Buck said in the letter published on Tuesday on the club's website.
"These actions are unacceptable and unwelcome both in our club and in football."
"A deeply unpleasant but vocal minority which refuses to join us in the 21st century has shamed the great majority of our decent, well-behaved fans."
He said the club "must all come together to stamp out these ugly scenes", listing a number of initiatives that Chelsea have been involved in to tackle discrimination.
"If you do not share these values, this is not the club for you," he said.
"We must not allow a small minority of fans to bring further embarrassment upon us, and will continue to take the strongest possible action against them."

Fifa study to decide fate of 48-team World Cup
MIAMI • Qatari officials will meet Fifa's leadership in Miami today as world football's governing body kick-starts the possibility of expanding the 2022 World Cup and adding new host nations.
Fifa's ruling council will discuss a feasibility study looking at a possible 48-team tournament rather than one planned for 32 teams in Qatar.
Media reports have suggested that Oman and Kuwait are being considered as possible hosts for some of the games in an expanded tournament.
A spokesman for Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the organising body for the 2022 World Cup, declined to comment on the feasibility study but said Qatari officials would be present at the meeting in Miami.
Speaking to beIN Sport last Saturday, Nasser Al-Khater, chief executive of the 2022 World Cup, said any decision over changes would have to be made jointly by Fifa and the local organisers.
"We reiterate our assertion that the State of Qatar is preparing to host the tournament (with) all its 32 teams, and has not yet taken any decision to increase the number of teams participating in the tournament to 48 teams and did not take any decision to participate with other countries," said Al-Khater.
"A further discussion will be had on March 14 and 15 in the United States of America and will be decided on the basis of the results of the feasibility study conducted by the Supreme Committee."
The 2022 World Cup is already unusual in that it will take place during the European winter rather than its usual June-July slot.
Most major European leagues will be forced to rearrange their competition schedules in order to cater for the Nov 21-Dec 18 tournament.
Those dates would likely be stretched further with the addition of 16 teams.
The 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico is already scheduled to be a 48-team tournament.
The council meeting will also discuss Fifa president Gianni Infantino's plans for an expanded Club World Cup.
A 24-team Club World Cup would be held every four years and start in 2021 if approved.
Fifa has, however, backed away from a vote on a planned new 'Worldwide Nations League' after the governing body's task force reported that it was unable to find consensus on a format for the potential money-spinner.
