Football: Frankfurt oust Benfica to reach Europa League last four

FRANKFURT, Germany (REUTERS) - Eintracht Frankfurt beat Benfica 2-0 on Thursday (April 18) to overturn a 4-2 first leg deficit and advance to the Europa League last four on the away goal rule for their first European semi-final appearance in 39 years.
Goals from Filip Kostic and Sebastian Rode were enough to put them through and they will next face Chelsea, who beat Slavia Prague.
Eintracht, German Cup winners last season, reached their first semi-final in a European competition since winning the UEFA Cup back in 1980 by punishing their opponents' passive approach.
The Portuguese, finalists in 2013 and 2014, were largely toothless, content to sit back and soak up the pressure but with little to show for up front until after Eintracht's second goal in the 67th minute.
"The whole team did it great and it was not easy," said match winner Rode.
"We promised ourselves to come out fighting and to soak up the atmosphere. The fans pushed us. We are delighted to have advanced."
Benfica initially did well to keep Frankfurt's attack at bay.
They could do nothing though when unmarked Filip Kostic fired in on the rebound after Mijat Gacinovic's effort bounced off the post in the 37th.
The German club, one of four former winners of the trophy in this season's quarter-finals, along with Chelsea, Napoli and Valencia, needed only one more goal to advance to the last four.
However, it was Benfica's first leg hat-trick hero Joao Felix who came close in the 48th minute. He shook off two markers, cut back into the box from the left but his effort was deflected narrowly wide by Frankfurt defender Simon Falette.
That was to be the visitors' only real chance and Rode settled the tie for the hosts when he drilled in from the edge of the box.
Benfica hit the post in the 85th but could not find the goal that would send them through.

Son helps South Korea to win Asian Cup group

A day after injured top scorer Harry Kane was ruled out till March, Tottenham's other in-form man Son Heung-min showed what Spurs would be missing during his absence owing to the Asian Cup. Handed the captain's armband, the South Korean revitalised the Taeguk Warriors with two assists against China at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi yesterday, after they were able to only scrape 1-0 wins in their first two Group C games. Son, playing less than 72 hours after Sunday's Premier League 1-0 loss to Manchester United, earned the first chance after he was tripped and Hwang Ui-jo put away the penalty after 14 minutes. His second assist came six minutes after the break, an inswinging corner that Kim Min-jae (above) met with a powerful header for his second goal of the Cup. Korea, joint favourites with Iran, won the group with nine points, with China on six. Kyrgyzstan beat the Philippines 3-1 to finish third but can still reach the last 16.

Football: Proud Pochettino demands consistency from title-chasing Spurs

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino says his players need to be consistent if they are to win the Premier League title after outclassing Cardiff City on Tuesday (Jan 1).
Goals by Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Korean star Son Heung-min inside the opening half hour saw Spurs beat the Welsh side 3-0, leapfrog Manchester City into second spot and go six points behind leaders Liverpool.
City host Liverpool on Thursday but Pochettino was keener to focus on what his team can do to deliver the London club's first league title since 1961.
"I don't want to see the table. Of course we are in a good position," he told Sky Sports.
"We need to be consistent. You must be consistent during the whole season."
Pochettino, who remains the bookmaker's favourite to get the full-time job at Manchester United, said the overall performance of his team had delighted him after Saturday's damaging 3-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
"I'm very pleased, the one thing I need to say is we suffered without rest between the games and therefore from the players it was magnificent," said the 46-year-old Argentinian.
"They deserve full credit. It was a very tough period for us."

Pochettino, who despite garnering credit for developing young players is yet to win a trophy in his managerial career, says he will be able to fill the large gap that will be left with Son leaving for Asian Cup duty.
"That is football, we knew it would happen," said Pochettino.
"He will go with his national team but we have players and football is about the squad and surely we will find the solution."
Eriksen said the victory had eased the pressure on Spurs in terms of the title race.
"We put pressure on everyone and took pressure off ourselves. It'll be back on for the next game," the Dane told Sky Sports.
"It felt like we were 18 points behind but we're not far off."

Football: Llorente hits hat-trick as Spurs crush Tranmere 7-0 in FA Cup

BIRKENHEAD, England (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur's Spanish striker Fernando Llorente struck a hat-trick as the Premier League side crushed League Two (fourth tier) Tranmere Rovers 7-0 in the opening game of the FA Cup third round at Prenton Park on Friday (Jan 4).
Spurs chalked up their biggest ever competitive away win after defender Serge Aurier broke the deadlock with a deflected shot from the edge of the area five minutes before the break to breach a Tranmere side who had competed well in the first half.
It was a very different story after the break with Llorente, restricted to a place on the bench for much of this season, slotting home from close range after Son Heung-min burst down the right and delivered a perfect low cross.
Right back Aurier then added his second goal, driving the ball home after excellent creative work from Son.
South Korean forward Son himself made it 4-0 with a solo run from inside his own half, without a challenge from Tranmere's defenders, which ended with a clinical finish.
Tottenham's promising 18-year-old midfielder Oliver Skipp then delivered a wonderful through ball for Llorente who slipped the ball home to make it five in the 71st minute.
A minute later the former Athletic Bilbao striker completed his hat-trick, poking home a low cross from Lucas Moura, and within minutes Mauricio Pochettino had taken him off, adding to Tranmere's troubles by bringing Harry Kane off the bench.
The England captain added the seventh by cleverly flicking the ball over goalkeeper Scott Davies after a defence-splitting pass from Dele Alli.

Football: Billy McNeill, captain of Celtic's European Cup-winning team, dies aged 79

(THE GUARDIAN) - Billy McNeill, the first British player to lift the European Cup as captain of the Celtic side that won the trophy in 1967, has died aged 79.
His association with the Scottish football giants spanned more than 60 years and he managed the club in two spells. He played 486 times for them from 1957 to 1975 as a defender, most famously for Jock Stein's "Lisbon Lions" when they defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in the final of the European Cup.
He then managed the side from 1978 to 1983 and 1987 to 1991. As player and manager he won 31 trophies with Celtic.
McNeill also played 29 times for Scotland. Later he managed Clyde, Aberdeen, Manchester City and Hibernian.
In a statement released by Celtic, his family announced: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father Billy McNeill. He passed away late last night (April 22) surrounded by his family and loved ones. He suffered from dementia for a number of years and fought bravely to the end, showing the strength and fortitude he always has done throughout his life.
"We would also like to note our love and appreciation to our mother, Liz, for the care, devotion and love she gave to our father throughout his illness. No one could have done any more.
"While this is a very sad time for all the family and we know our privacy will be respected, our father always made time for the supporters so please tell his stories, sing his songs and help us celebrate his life."
